It connects via the Micro USB connection along the top of the controller and uses two small pegs that lock into the screw holes on the back to hold it firmly in place. It features a pass-through USB port which allows for simultaneous charging of both the Power Pak and the controller with a single cable.
While it does appear that the Power Pak could both get in the way of comfortably holding the controller and could add some additional weight, Nyko seems to be pretty sure that’s not the case. The company’s director of marketing, Chris Arbogast, said “It’s lightweight and does not impede gameplay or ergonomics, enabling users to extend their gaming sessions.”
Head below for more details:
It takes about 2 hours to charge a DS4 traditionally, and even though we can finally charge them while PS4 is in standby mode, its easy to see how these Paks could come in handy for long gaming sessions. The Power Pak also features a dedicated on/off switch allowing you to engage the extra juice when stopping the game to wait for a charge just isn’t an option.
The PS4 Power Paks follow a long line of similar devices by Nyko including PS4 charge base, which will charge two DualShock 4’s at once (currently $21.43 down from $30 on Amazon). The company also makes highly rated versions of this tech for just about all consoles and its Nyko Charge Base for Xbox 360 is ranked as Amazon’s #1 Best Seller.
Mileage will vary here, hardcore gamers might find the Pak to be a bit intrusive, as some early reviews seem to point at, but at $20 the added battery life can certainly be of use to some users.
