Amazon already dominates the online shipping game and it’s looking to put even more pressure on big box stores starting today. The massive national retailer has decided to drop its free shipping threshold from $35 to $25. And that is not just for Prime members, everyone now gets free standard shipping on all orders over $25 that are fulfilled by Amazon. More details below…
This is certainly a big change, and makes shopping on Amazon even sweeter, especially when it comes to lower priced items for around the house or even groceries that need to be replenished on a regular basis.
Earlier this year, we saw the minimum free shipping threshold actually rise from $35 up to $49. At the time it felt like the move might here to stay, as it made Amazon’s already solid Prime membership even more valuable. That move came just weeks after Walmart decided to drop its threshold down to $35 on many of the items both stores carry. But it looks like Amazon has had enough and is looking to flex its muscle once again. While we have seen other major retailers down at the $25 mark, Target and Best Buy are both currently sitting at $35.
When Amazon decided to bump the threshold up to $49, many suggested (including us) this could cause competitors to raise their own free shipping minimums. So hopefully today’s move by the game’s biggest player will cause Best Buy and friends to get get a little desperate and match up.
While a Prime membership may not seem quite as valuable now that the minimum is so low.
