Brew a customized cup of coffee from your iPad with Philips’ limited edition espresso machine

There’s been an exhausting amount of connected home products at IFA this year, but the Philips Saeco GranBaristo Avanti managed to stand out from the bunch.

Keeping tabs on your home’s air quality is important, but we think being able to make a strong cup of joe without leaving your bed is also a must have for any connected home. Philips showed a concept of the Saeco GranBaristo Avanti last year at IFA, but now their back and ready to bring “the world’s first connected, full automatic espresso machine for home use” into the spotlight…

Connect the GranBaristo Avanti to your tablet over Bluetooth and you’ll be able to craft 18 different styles to satiate your caffeine fix:

From a short, intense, full-bodied ristretto to a well-rounded filter coffee taste or the perfect cappuccino, you can experiment with a variety of coffee specialties at the touch of your tablet

The Saeco Avanti app not only allows you to share your favorite drink concoctions on social media, take coffee classes, and get tips to help maintain your machine.

Unfortunately, it’s not going to be easy to get your hands on one. So far, only 500 individually numbered units have been produced and they’ll only be available in “premium retailers across Germany, Benelux and Russia for a select time period.” We haven’t heard any pricing info yet, but it’s probably safe to say it’s going to cost more than that Mr. Coffee machine on your kitchen counter.

It may not look as pretty and it definitely doesn’t work with your iPad, but if you don’t score a GranBaristo Avanti machines then you should check out our favorite (everyday) coffee maker, the Aeropress.

The launch of the Saeco GranBaristo Avanti heralds a breakthrough in coffee innovation, variety and customization

  • The world’s first connected, full automatic espresso machine for home use
  • Sleek and elegantly designed, this exclusive first edition espresso machine offers a game-changing coffee experience

Berlin, Germany – Delivering on Philips’ commitment to leverage digital technology to bring meaningful innovation in personal health and well-being, today Saeco – one of Philips’ premium espresso brands – launches the exclusive GranBaristo Avanti, the most advanced at-home coffee experience. The elegantly designed GranBaristo Avanti is the world’s first connected, full automatic espresso machine for home use, where you can orchestrate your favorite coffee drinks from your tablet device. The GranBaristo Avanti – first shown in concept form at IFA 2013 – has evolved and will be available in premium retailers across Germany, Benelux and Russia for a select time period.

A breakthrough in coffee innovation, variety and customization, the GranBaristo Avanti takes the coffee experience to a new level. The revolutionary brewing group delivers the ultimate variety with 18 drink options. From a short, intense, full-bodied ristretto to a well-rounded filter coffee taste or the perfect cappuccino, you can experiment with a variety of coffee specialties at the touch of your tablet. Its user-friendly app, connected to the machine via Bluetooth, ensures each and every coffee need is available right at your fingertips. Perfectly hot, quality coffee can be enjoyed in no time, thanks to next generation thermo-speed technology.

Today’s coffee lovers are seeking greater coffee varieties and the opportunity to share knowledge of coffee recipes, all while engaging with the latest technologies. The GranBaristo Avanti addresses these needs by allowing you to learn how to make a variety of drinks through the innovative Avanti app. You can now customize your coffee beverages through an intuitive setting panel which makes the coffee experience easy and enjoyable. In addition, coffee aficionados can share their favorite creations across social media, take part in coffee connoisseur classes via the Saeco Brand Ambassador program and receive handy tips for effortless machine maintenance.

The sleek and sophisticated design of the GranBaristo Avanti is enhanced by an exterior of steel/silver or steel/anthracite in addition to a new white and blue display, both adding to its premium, high-end appearance.  Only 500 units of the GranBaristo Avanti have been developed, with each product individually numbered and available for a limited time period.  Since the concept was previewed at IFA 2013, extensive consumer market research has been conducted, leading to enhancements in the user interface panel that complement the product’s elegant look and feel.  What’s more, the GranBaristo Avanti is also backed up by a dedicated consumer care service.

At Saeco, we strove for perfection when we created the world’s first full automatic espresso machine for home use.  Thirty years on, and driven by the same passion for in-cup excellence, we are proud to introduce this new breakthrough in coffee innovation, variety and customization. The GranBaristo Avanti is a game-changing coffee experience which satisfies more tastes than ever, all wrapped in a stylish, cutting edge design,” says Nicholas Lee, Category Lead of Philips Espresso. “This new world innovation means coffee lovers can induldge their passion for trying and sharing exciting coffee creations using their tablet device for the first time.”

Every body seems to bash the machine because they think it’s just so you don’t have to get up off the couch. Personally my thought is that instead of slapping a 10 inch screen on a coffee machine you use your iPad that you might just already have. And I’m looking for it in the U.S. to purchase soon. And it also has a feature that allows you to design several drinks in a row then go to the kitchen and make them for something like a dinner party. And the bluetooth only works within about 15 feet so you probably couldn’t sit in the living room anyways unless you like to make coffee in the living room. HAHA

I love technology as much as the next guy but this is a bit ridiculous. If I’m buying a coffee machine and wanting to invest in quality, I’m looking at something like the Ratio Eight: http://ratiocoffee.com/

  3. What’s the advantage of having an iOS controlled coffee machine? Lamps and music is ok, but this is really as useless as the google glass just for the nerds and techno freaks.
You still need someone to bring your cup of coffee. I thought slavery was abolished?
It’s the same useless issue as the open/close (eject) button on the VCR/CD Player remote control you still have to be next the device to change the CD.
If the espresso machine doesn’t work as expected (seen on any machine out there, especially the expensive devices with the more expensive capsules) and mess up the coffee around you kitchen you need an IP67 proof iPad / iPhone.
I like home automation but there are limits!

I was super excited to see this and hope more products like this come to the market, I am an avid Nespresso user. The only thing wrong with this is if you were to want a cappuccino or latte then most people use cold milk, you would have to plug in the milk reservioir presumably from the fridge so you would have to be right next to the machine anyways, neglecting most of the novelty of doing it from your phone
