The latest smartphones are great! True technological marvels really, but using them while driving… not-so great. Texting while driving is so dangerous and its estimated that taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds is enough time to lead to a crash. In fact, smartphone distraction is reported to take more lives than alcohol when used behind the wheel. So how can we keep our eyes on the road and still use all of the regular functions of our phones? A new Kickstarter funded product called the Hudway Cast hopes to answer this question.
These HUDs (Heads-up Displays) are not new to the automotive industry. Typically, you only get to see them in the most expensive cars and they usually only display limited presets by the car’s manufacturer. Because of this, you would probably still use your smartphone while driving for maps and other functions. And the problem with mounting your phone in your car is that viewing it takes your eyes off the road.
In all reality, the Hudway Cast is basically just an external display for your smartphone, but that’s what it’s intended to be. It projects a 20-inch screen enlargement of your phone’s display and it’s virtual image is focused about 9-feet in front of you so you can still concentrate on the road. Just like the HUDs in luxury cars but at a fraction of the price. The Hudway Cast is simple to install as well as it is easy to use. Just place it on your dashboard and plug in the cigarette lighter socket in your car. That’s all you have to do. When you’re finished driving just take it off the mount and put it away in the glovebox when you leave your car.
With 20 days left to go in its campaign, Hudway Cast has already surpassed its fundraising goal by three times the amount. If you want your own Hudway Cast, you can pledge $199 or more and save $50 off the expected retail price. Shipping to backers is estimated to start in November.
