LifeProof is a name that everyone knows and loves. I’m sure you’ve either owned one or had friends with them. It got its name from making water and drop-proof cases for years, but they’re changing that with SLAM. The latest case from LifeProof brings drop protection with the loss of waterproofing, likely due to the fact that Apple has shipped phones with built-in water-resistance since the iPhone 7.

SLAM is still a two-piece case so it can provide the most protection possible, but utilizes an open front and open ports to give the slimmest design they could. This case has been drop-tested to 6.6-feet (or 2-meters) and has a raised front bevel to protect your phone from landing on its face. This is one thing I always look for in a case, as I often set my phone face-down on surfaces when not using it. The clear back allows you to show off the beautiful glass on the iPhone X/8/Plus, or maybe a custom skin or design that you wrap your phone in.

Though we would never recommend you take your iPhone swimming, as anything can happen, LifeProof’s breakaway from waterproofing means it can start to make its products slimmer by removing features that Apple now builds into the phones themselves. SLAM is said to be the slimmest LifeProof case ever designed.

Because LifeProof left the ports and screen uncovered this time around, it makes accessing your iPhone even easier. An uncovered screen means you can now use tempered glass or other screen protectors without having to worry about deforming the case or putting unnecessary pressure on your phone. Open ports mean there’s no more annoying flaps or screws to lose or buy adapters for when you want to charge or listen to music, either. All-in-all, the SLAM looks to be one of the best cases from LifeProof yet.

If you’d still rather have waterproofing built into your case, LifeProof also offers the FRĒ and NËXT cases for iPhone X, 8, and 8 Plus. LifeProof’s FRĒ gives you full-on four-proof protection from water, drops, dirt, and snow. NËXT gives you drop protection as well as an IP5X rating to block dirt, dust, and snow from attacking your iPhone.

SLAM is available today from LifeProof’s own website for the iPhone X, 8, and 8 Plus for $49.99 each in 4 color options. The 8 and 8 Plus cases are also backward compatible with the 7 and 7 Plus, so even if you don’t have Apple’s latest you can still enjoy LifeProof’s newest cases. SLAM will be available on BestBuy’s website as well as in-store starting November 5th for $49.99.
