Getting that perfect shot with your smartphone has become immensely easier over the years as Apple, Google and other manufacturers have placed more emphasis on photo-capturing capabilities. Accessory makers have bolstered iPhone and Android phone cameras as well, with a variety of clip on lenses and more. But for those looking to take their photography arsenals to an even higher level, this upcoming adapter lets you connect just about any DSLR lens to your smartphone.
This isn’t the first time that accessory manufacturers have thought about strapping additional lenses onto a smartphone to improve its camera. Amazon just so happens to be full of fisheye, wide-angle and telephoto lens add-ons. But all of these pale in comparison to the latest from Cinematic International.
Based in Shenzhen, the veteran Chinese photography equipment maker has been in the game for over a decade. Primarily focusing on producing camera gear, the company is now looking to make the move into smartphone photography with its latest release. The company’s recently debuted accessory allows you to pair your favorite camera lens to your preferred smartphone. The adapter itself is actually pretty simple, basically strapping a DOF lens connector onto a smartphone case. Of course there’s some precision involved in getting the optics to line up, but all-in-all, it’s a fairly low-tech accessory.
Cinematic International claims that the adapter will work with just about any type of lens, meaning you should have no issues mounting your Sony, Canon, and Nikon lenses. The adapter was just recently debuted at NAB 2018 in Las Vegas, where the folks over at No Film School got an early look at the company’s latest.
Now there’s no denying that Cinematic International lens adapter is a unique photography accessory, but outside the novelty of pairing a DSLR lens to your iPhone, will it actually be useful? The whole point of smartphone photography setups is to be quick and easy to take on-the-go, so in a way it’s counterintuitive. Even so, I’ve got to hand it to Cinematic International for such an interesting accessory.
But unfortunately, hardcore mobile photographers looking to combine the best of both iPhone and DSLR worlds will be disappointed to hear that the adapter currently isn’t available for purchase. As of now, there’s no telling on when Cinematic International’s latest photography accessory will actually come to market, or how much it may inevitably cost. Regardless, this is certainly the most impressive, albeit excessive, smartphone add-on we’ve seen.
