If you ever take photos at night, you know how much of a negative impact the darkness can have on the quality of your photos. The end result produces a lot of noise, less of the environment is visible, and to top it all off, in many cases the camera flash turns on and ends up making photos look even more unrealistic. A new company called SiOnyx aims to change all of that with its new Aurora Night Vision Camera.
The Aurora Night Vision Camera was initially placed on Kickstarter with a goal of $50,000. A goal was funded within just four hours, giving the creators the funds they needed to bring the camera to market. By the time the project funding had closed, it ended up with over $300,000 of support.
As you would expect, the reason for the cameras success is due to the features offered. Aurora packs what it is calling ‘True Color Night Vision’, a feature that allows users to see at night like they can see in the day. Too crazy to believe? Take a look at their recent video comparing that goes head-to-head with a GoPro Hero5.
On the SiOnyx website, the company touts that the Aurora is the ‘world’s 1st waterproof day/night camera’. With an IP67 water-resistance rating, Aurora can withstand submersion as deep as 1-meter for up to 30 minutes.
To put that into perspective, some of the latest smartphones like iPhone X feature similar ratings with the primary purpose of preventing damage caused by accidental spills or quickly jumping in the pool without checking your pockets first.
The camera’s waterproofing capabilities combined with its versatile mounting options make it an ideal option for all kinds of activities ranging from hunting to boating. While you can grab trail cameras for hunting activities, they are grayscale and the quality is lackluster in comparison.
GoPro cameras are great for action shots, but as witnessed in the video above, the quality of the Aurora camera at night cannot be beaten. In addition to using infrared technology, the camera also takes better shots than competitors due to its large 1-inch sensor.
As noted in the product’s marketing video, Aurora can be paired with a smartphone via a companion app. Once paired, you can tap into social features, navigate waypoints, take compass bearings, and more.
The SiOnyx Aurora Night Vision Camera is priced at $799 and pre-orders are available today via the company’s website. For a limited time SiOnyx is offering a 10% discount on orders, bringing the price down to $719. As the time of this post the company expects deliveries to make it to customers within 3-4 weeks.
