Dell’s Alienware division decided to make a huge announcement at CES 2019, claiming that it’ll be the first manufacturer to sell a laptop with a 240Hz display built-in. Alienware will also offer an OLED version of the m15 gaming laptop, for those who would prefer that.
Also on the OLED front, Alienware announced a 55-inch 4K gaming monitor (more like display at that size). This massive screen features a 120Hz refresh rate, which is rare on 4K OLED monitors like this. Dell is also updating its XPS and G-series laptops with OLED as well, which is great for consumers everywhere. More details below.
Alienware m15 Gaming Laptop w/ 240Hz or OLED display
If you’ve never used a high refresh rate monitor, it’s life changing. Ok, maybe not quite life-changing, but it can make your computing experience much smoother. There is little to no stuttering or lag when moving windows or your cursor (which you don’t know is there until you experience a high refresh rate monitor), and it is a must-have for any gamer. Until now, we’ve only had 120 or 144Hz displays, and this is set to be the first 240Hz screen to market on a laptop.
Though Dell and Alienware didn’t specify what resolution the 240Hz panel will run at, we’re expecting 1080p. Even with most high-end desktop setups, it can be quite difficult to achieve a smooth 240Hz at 1440p when gaming. If you’d rather go for resolution and quality over refresh rate, Alienware will also offer it with a 4K OLED panel as well. This will be perfect for content creators and media consumers as 4K OLED should look absolutely fantastic.
Spec-wise, you can pick out up to an Intel Core i9 CPU, 32GB of RAM, and NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q GPU giving you enough power to do just about anything. There’s no pricing yet, but it should launch sometime around March.
Alienware 55-inch 4K 120Hz OLED Display
Large-format displays have been something that companies have been after for a while. Gamers are going bigger and bigger, and companies know this. Though many people use normal TVs for gaming, it’s not optimal. Despite being 4K, it might not be native 120Hz at that resolution and could downscale you to keep up with your computer’s demands.
Alienware’s latest 55-inch 4K monitor features a lot of really awesome features. First off, it is OLED so you’ll have great contrast, fantastic and deep blacks, and the dynamic range is perfect for all of the new HDR games coming out. But the stand-out feature here is that it can run 4K at 120Hz, which is almost unheard of until now. Like the above laptop, there’s no set pricing yet but it should become available in the second half of 2019.
Dell’s updated XPS & Alienware lines feature OLED displays
Dell’s XPS lineup of laptops is one that many professionals who rely on Windows pick up when shopping for a reliable machine. Dell is updating that line now with 4K OLED screens, which will improve contrast and color accuracy for creative professionals and make cinematic viewing experiences even better. Plus, the new panels will also sport HDR, 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, and have a 100,000:1 contrast ratio.
Dell didn’t stop with its XPS lineup, however, as the above Alienware m15 will feature this new OLED panel alongside the Alienware G15. I love that we’re starting to see OLED in more places now and can’t wait for it to become the industry standard.
