Tested: Nomad Find My Tracking Card Pro – metal build and 16-month battery life, but a touch thicker

I love me some Find My, and perhaps the most useful implementation of it in my life has come by way of those wonderful wallet tracker cards. Nomad’s Tracking Card (now known as the Tracking Card Air) has been a staple in my everyday carry for years and something I never leave the house without. However, the brand debuted a new Pro model this year with a metal build and much longer battery life and I have now had a chance to put this thing to the test, so let’s take a look to see if it is worth the higher price tag?

Hands-on with the Nomad Tracking Card Pro

The Nomad Tracking Card Pro comes black or white and carries a $39 list price.

9to5Toys’ Take

Anyone who has followed my coverage of these handy Find My wallet trackers will already know how much I love the Nomad Tracking Card Air. This is the original base model that received an official name change to signify its slimmer form-factor by comparison to the newer and more powerful Tracking Card Pro.

They are essentially the same in terms of their application and Find My prowess – the credit card-shaped devices slide into your wallet (or anything else really) to provide Find My tracking action. And while it should come as no surprise considering how well the Air model has performed for me all of this time, the actual charging and tracking action has been flawless on the new Pro model in my testing.

But if you’re considering paying the additional cash on the pro variant, it really comes down to three factors: The thicker build, the look, and how much you value the extended battery life.

I can certainly appreciate the more obviously metal and robust build here. It and, presumably, the expanded battery life result in a more premium looking and feeling tracking card but very much come in exchange for the thicker form-factor. It doesn’t look all that much thicker in the imagery, but as you can see in the chart above it very much is and it becomes far more obvious when you are sliding it in and out of a card carrier.

I love the ultra-slim Air model, and, equally as much, the exposed metal edge on the Pro, but if you don’t have room in your card carrier or wallet for nearly two more cards worth of heft, it might not be worth it – most folks won’t actually see the card to appreciate the look all too often after all.

But what about that extra battery life?

The expanded battery is quite significant here though, depending on how you look at it. We are talking about the difference between 5 months on the Air and 16 months on the Pro. Both feature wireless charging on any Qi or MagSafe pad, but you’ll certainly need to charge the Air model more often than the Pro.

At 5 months, let’s just keep in mind that’s really only a couple times a year you’ll need to pop the Air out of your wallet and drop it down on a charger, and you can do that while you’re sleeping overnight – it’s really not all that much of a hassle to charge it up. The 16 months is super nice, but, for me, it’s really not a huge deal to have to charge the Air 2+ times a year.

In the end, and with all of that in mind, we are really only talking about $10 difference here as well. That very much matters, but if you really love the look of the Pro and a little bit of extra room to spare in your card carrier, it might just be worth dropping the extra cash down for the arguably more slick design and more powerful battery. On the other hand, if you’re not all that taken by the looks and extra juice, the more slimline Air model is still one of the best options in the game that will keep an extra $10 in your pocket.
