Tested: Anker’s latest foldable 25W Prime charging station might be my new go-to travel solution [Launch deal]

As you might have seen in our launch coverage, Anker has now unleashed its new Prime Wireless Charging Station. This time featuring the 25W Qi2 MagSafe action in a 3-in-1 setup for your entire Apple kit, it can fold down into a palm-sized unit that might be my new go-to travel charger. Scope out some hands-on impressions below.

Review: Anker Prime Wireless Charging Station (3-in-1, MagGo, AirCool, Foldable)

9to5Toys’ Take

This 3-in-1 charging solution folds down into a sort of rounded off rectangle small enough to fit into your pocket or take up very little space in your EDC/travel kit.

The build quality is substantially better than I thought it might be before getting my hands on it. You can expect the same sort of plastic-like frame as usual – no surprises there – but this thing is much more hefty and robust than expected. It only weighs 8.11 ounces, but it is more than stable enough to maintain its position on the tabletop or nightstand without flopping all over the place like some of those small puck-style 3-in-1 models – I absolutely despise this and am very glad to report it is not the case with the new Anker Prime model here.

The folding hinge that provides various viewing angles for the main MagSafe stand certainly does the trick and also feels quite robust – it’s tight, but in a good way, and feels as though it will remain as such. The same goes for the pop-out Apple Watch charger – you simply push down on it to pop it out of its housing, and then snap it back down in place to rest it back flush with the unit before folding it out.

All-in-all the build quality is good here. Nothing particularly remarkable, but a little bit better than I thought it might be.

As for the wireless charging action, Anker rates this model with the full-on 25W max wireless passthrough we have come to expect on modern MagSafe units. In my testing thus far, it certainly manages to provide as much, but things do slow down when you’re charging an Apple Watch and AirPods at the same time – this unit is a 25W max affair, so you won’t get the full stream of juice with all three pieces of kit docked and charging as far as I can tell.

That said, I don’t really need anything to charge any faster than it would have already overnight, so this all works out nicely for me.

For those of you looking to make sure, or rather, maintain that 25W of transmission to iPhone over MagSafe, Anker is employing its active cooling tech fan here. The whole fan thing for me is a bit gimmicky or, perhaps, unnecessary – as I really don’t need to it charge my phone so fast that it wouldn’t even need that, but some do, and it’s nice to see some advancements being made here. Early versions of chargers with these fans were sometimes quite loud, but I’m also happy to report that this one isn’t – you can barely hear it in a completely quiet room, likely due to the “Cicada Wing” biomimetic airflow channels Anker is delivering here.

You can indeed use the side-mounted button to turn it off if you want, and there are LED indicators there to tell once you have as well.

The old Anker 3-in-1 Cube charger was a favorite among staffers on the road, but I was on the hunt for something new (hopefully with the 25W action) and hopefully an even more compact form-factor, and I think I’ve found it with the new foldable Prime model here. Again, there’s nothing overly ground breaking here, just a well-made charging solution that works just as nicely at home as it does on the road while delivering a portable option far better than some of the latest models we have seen in those flimsy puck form-factors. It is more pricey than I want it to be, but there is also a nice launch deal up for grabs here as well.
