$30.99The better part of 20 years after its initial release, Speed Racer (2008) is getting a 4K Blu-Ray remaster and coming back to theaters for a limited time. Here’s where you can view it and where you can pre-order the physical release.
Directed by the Wachowskis of Matrix fame, 2008’s Speed Racer adaptation became a cult classic over the past two decades, beloved by many despite the film’s poor initial reception.
Now, it’s coming back.
Warner Bros. Discovery today officially announced, after months of online speculation and rumors, that Speed Racer is getting a full remaster with a 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray release, a 4K digital release, and a return to theaters.
That return to the big screen will take place across 225 theaters in the US in partnership with Flashback Cinema. Showings will be on April 25, April 26, and April 29.
Then, on May 19, Speed Racer will see its 4K remaster hit home theaters, both in the form of a digital release from retailers such as Apple TV, Google Play, Amazon Prime Video, Fandango at Home (formerly Vudu), and others. The physical 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray release is available for pre-order now for $30.99, with a Steelbook also coming, but pre-orders have not yet opened for that release just yet.
The physical re-release includes an assortment of special features too, as Warner Bros. explains in the press release excerpt below:
“Fearlessly hurtling down the track, careening around, over and through the competition in his thundering Mach 5, Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) was born to race cars. But when Speed turns down a lucrative offer from Royalton Industries, he not only infuriates the company’s maniacal owner (Roger Allam) but uncovers a terrible secret–some of the biggest races are being fixed by a handful of ruthless moguls! The only way for Speed to save his family’s business and the sport he loves is to beat Royalton at his own game. With the support of his family (John Goodman and Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon) and his loyal girlfriend, Trixie (Christina Ricci), Speed teams with his one-time rival–the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox)–to win the race that took his brother, Rex Racer’s, life: the death-defying, cross-country rally known as The Crucible.”
Speed Racer will be available to purchase on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc online and in-store at major retailers and available for purchase Digitally from Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play, Fandango at Home and more.
Warner Bros. Pictures, in partnership with Flashback Cinema, will also present special theatrical screenings of Speed Racer the week of April 25 in 225 locations across the U.S.
