Microsoft has officially announced that it’s introducing XBOX Backward Compatibility on PC to bring a selection of classic XBOX games from the past across PC and handhelds, including the ROG XBOX Ally and XBOX Ally X. It’s getting the ball rolling today in preview with four titles, though Microsoft says this is only the start of a much broader backward compatibility push. Below are the OG Xbox titles you should be able to jump in today:
- BLiNX: The Time Sweeper
- Conker: Live and Reloaded
- Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
- Fuzion Frenzy
Each of these games, according to Microsoft, will be available to purchase separately on PC and will also be included across all Xbox Game Pass plans. It’s worth noting that anyone who already owns a digital copy of one of these games will be able to access it on PC without buying it again. That also extends to Windows-based handhelds such as the Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X, meaning you can take these original XBOX titles on the go as well.
The original gameplay will remain intact for these titles, but it appears that Microsoft has made a few technical improvements for the PC version with backward compatibility. You’ll be able to enable VSync, increase the rendering resolution by up to four times, adjust anisotropic filtering and anti-aliasing, and switch between fullscreen and windowed modes. Notably, the games will also offer configurable language and audio settings.
There is a list of hardware requirements to fulfill in order to take advantage of backward compatibility, although most recent PCs should have little trouble running them. Here, take a look:
- GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 950, AMD Radeon RX 550, Intel UHD 770, or Intel Arc A310
- CPU: Intel Core i3-8100, AMD Ryzen 3 1200, or AMD Ryzen Z2 A
- RAM: 8GB
- OS: Windows 11
Lastly, it’s worth noting that the achievement support is not available at launch, but it’s said to be coming to all four games soon. That feature will be available across both console and PC once it arrives.
