8BitDo just unleashed a Limited Edition all metal Apple II-inspired keyboard to celebrate Apple’s 50th anniversary

With Apple celebrating its 50th anniversary this week, 8BitDo has unveiled a special version of its Retro mechanical keyboard to mark the occasion. Called the AP50th Limited Edition, this model is built to celebrate 50 years of Apple and it’s inspired by the Apple II with classic beige and brown tones. It features a compact 68-key layout with a full aluminum build, including an aluminum shell, keycaps, and buttons. The limited-edition keyboard is now up for grabs directly from the brand’s online store for a rather hefty $499.99 shipped price, and you can get a closer look at it below along with more details.

8BitDo Retro 68 AP50th Limited Edition now up for grabs

This limited-edition 8BitDo Retro 68 keyboard features a compact 68-key layout that’s slightly smaller than the Retro TKL model we’ve featured a lot around here. It uses a gasket-mounted design for a softer, more comfortable typing feel. The standout feature here, as noted earlier, is its all-aluminum construction — not just the shell, but the keycaps and buttons as well — resulting in a fairly hefty build that weighs in at about 2.2 kgs.

It ships with a hot-swappable PCB that has integrated RGB lighting, and it also comes pre-installed with Kailh BOX Ice Cream Pro Max switches. Like other keyboards in 8BitDo’s lineup, this model is fully programmable through 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 for quick and easy customization.

On the connectivity front, it supports all three standard modes, meaning you get wired USB-C, 2.4GHz wireless, and Bluetooth LE, and it works with macOS, Windows 10, and Android devices. Another unique touch is the included set of Wireless Dual Super Buttons, which continues the AP50th-themed design. Rounding things out is a built-in 6,500mAh battery rated for up to 300 hours of use on a single charge.

The new Retro 68 AP50th Limited Edition keyboard, as mentioned earlier, is now available directly from the brand’s online store for $499.99 shipped. At that price, it’s clearly aimed more at collectors and keyboard enthusiasts, but the all-aluminum construction should give it a noticeably more premium feel than most keyboards on the market.
