This voice-activated sensor turns any regular trashcan into an iOS connected smartcan

Last week we featured a couple of smart devices to help keep the items in your kitchen automatically replenished, including these tiny iOS connected Droplet buttons and this hybrid smartcan. While the GeniCan isn’t going to help keep your floors clean at the same time, it can certainly make any one of your regular trashcans a whole lot smarter.

A small hub like device affixed to your trashcan/recycle bin via a simple magnet system, GeniCan acts as a sort of barcode scanner for the trash you throw away. You simply hold the item near the scanner before disposing of it, or give GeniCan a voice command using the on-board mic. It can then track those products to create reminders and aisle-by-aisle shopping lists directly on your smartphone.

The companion app also provides automatic delivery for the items you buy most frequently, similar to what we have seen with Droplet and Amazon Dash, along with reminders to take the trash out and more. You can see more details in the video below.

Currently at the beginning of quite a lofty $50,000 Indeigogo campaign, pre-orders are available at a discount for early backers. The GeniCan is currently expected to carry a $179 retail price, but you can pick up the limited early run right now for $119 each with a bonus T-shirt thrown in.

After that, it will shoot up to $149, and then to $179 once the campaign has ended. The small trashcan add-on will come in 5 colors: light grey, black, dark grey, blue and green.

  1. what the fuck… this seriously is one of the most useless products I have ever seen. How stupid do you need to be to make this worth it?!
