Logitech sure does want our attention this month, and they certainly have it. After announcing new PC mice last week, the company has now revealed a game-changer of a product. It will literally change PC gaming as we know it.

Powerplay is a new technology that builds wireless charging directly into your mouse pad. No longer will we need to pause in the middle of a game or while getting work done to replace mouse batteries. Best of all, you won’t be terribly interrupted while trying to beat that bad guy.

A wireless mouse that can be constantly charging is a true gift. According to Logitech, “it’s not really difficult to figure out that the ideal solution would be never having to plug in or change batteries at all.” They say that the challenge was to make it work in the context of gaming mice. It seems like Logitech understands that the common experience with gaming mice is that they die usually when the gamer is in the middle of a critical moment.

It’s because of this that for the last 4 years Logitech has been working on Powerplay. It works by creating an electromagnetic energy field over a large surface area, so you are not limited to a tiny charging station like we’ve seen for smartphones. This field becomes a charging current by the included Powercore module, that is attached magnetically to the underside of a compatible gaming mouse.

Powerplay is unique in its ability to charge during any mode of mouse movement, and also that it’s only 2mm thick, making it comfortable to use as a gaming surface. It even comes with an option of a hard or cloth surface to suit your personal mouse preferences.

To be sure that the wireless connection is as reliable as possible, Logitech included a Lightspeed wireless receiver in the Powerplay base for an ultra responsive mouse experience. Of course, this should probably be tested to make sure that’s accurate.

As a bonus to this new release, Logitech has also announced the first two mice to be officially compatible with the Powerplay. The G903, a nice upgrade from the G900, and the G703 which looks super similar to the highly rated G403. Both mice include the PMW3366 optical sensor, but were improved to last longer.

The Powerplay is up for pre-order at $99.99 and will be officially available in August. The G903 will be $149.99 and the G703 will go for $99.99 when they go on sale later this month.
