Super Mario 64 released back in the mid-90s for Nintendo 64 and was the very first time the company took the Mushroom Kingdom into 3D. With more than 11 million copies sold worldwide, not only was it a launch title alongside Pilotwings 64, it is the best-selling game on the system. As expected, it has maintained a strong cult following ever since, with a countless number of mods and user hacks having hit the net in the meantime.
The originally single player experience was fantastic and still is, but a new multiplayer mod is adding some very interesting elements to the core experience.
There are already some ROM mods out there that bring 2-player couch co-op to the experience, but that’s clearly not enough. SM64 is a new user hack brought to by Kaze Emanuar, Melonspeedruns and Marshivolt that turns Nintendo’s single-player 3D adventure platformer into an almost (massively) multiplayer death match. Well actually it can be anything you want.
The new mod allows up to 24 players, each having chosen their own Mushroom Kingdom character, to get into the same game at the same time. Each of the selectable characters has individual attributes and plays slightly differently.
You can just collectively rip through stages as the developers (mostly) intended, punch and kick the other players until they smash their controller (mouse) on the floor out of frustration or just play hide and seek in the castle. It’s up to you and the rest of your online Mushroom Kingdom squadron.
Now, as you likely expected, the process with which to do this is almost as archaic as the game itself. While not overly complicated, you’ll need to hit up some download links and follow the instructions in the videos found right here.
In other Nintendo news, the gaming giant has a Direct event scheduled for Wednesday. The 45-minute showcase will kick off at 3 pm (Eastern) and will center around what is up next for Switch and 3DS. But with release just around the corner now, Nintendo is specifically mentioning Super Mario Odyssey as one of the main talking points for this week’s announcement. That means we should get some new details and more than likely more footage of the upcoming 3D platformer. Stay locked to Toys as we will be covering the event on Wednesday afternoon.
