When we first heard about the upcoming collaboration between IKEA and Teenage Engineering, it was a little curious. The boutique electronics/music production products coming out of the Teenage Engineering camp the last several years really didn’t suggest an IKEA feature was on the way. But the company’s intersting sense of minimalism and unique design approach certainly fit in with some of the sensibilities IKEA has always been known for.
The upcoming FREKVENS (translates to frequency) party product line from IKEA and TE is still somewhat mysterious, all things considered, but we did get a nice update and some new imagery courtesy of an official IKEA Instagram post today.
Essentially what we are talking about is a brand new product category/line for the global home furnishing giant. FREKVENS is basically going to be a collection of speakers, lighting products, a vinyl player, some kind of guitar and more, all designed to help you throw the best party ever, wherever you might be.
Unfortunately, actual details on each product in the lineup are still scarce at best. From the new images we can clearly see what appears to be a collection of blocky, brightly colored gadgets with a series of add-on accessories for each.
They come across very much like a Teenage Engineering creation, which is always a good thing in my opinion. By the looks of it there is some kind of LED lighting gadget with various filters. Teenage Engineering’s music products come with loads of additional add-on gadgets that expand the functionality of the devices, so it would be easy to imagine those kinds of systems in place here.
Nonetheless, FREKVENS is still in the early stages of development according to IKEA:
We are just starting to shape the collection; it’s a work in progress. Together we constantly get new ideas to solutions and products that we want to keep on exploring
Here’s what Teenage Engineering had to say about the upcoming party gadgets:
In FREKVENS, we want to make products that everybody can grasp and handle…Even those who are not so tech-savvy should swiftly be able to understand and use the products. And that, I guess, has been the biggest challenge, to find the right balance between technology and user friendliness… IKEA is furniture, meatballs and soon… Party!
As of now, it looks like FREKVENS is set for a February 2019 release date, so you can expect more updates between now and then. Below you’ll find some early prototype photos, sketches and more:
