JVC released its new Everio R camcorder lineup today. It consists of three models that are exceptionally rugged and offer 2-3 times the battery life you would see from a GoPro. One of the new offerings is capable of shooting 4K, while the other two tap out at 1080p.
If there is one thing that JVC wants to convey about its new lineup, it would have to be durability. The new camcorders are able to endure low temperatures, submersion in water, and exposure to both snow and dust.
When we say low temperatures, we mean that the camcorders can function fully while in environments as low as 14-degrees Fahrenheit. While there are locations that need something that can handle even cooler temperatures, you will typically struggle to find electronics that remain functional when the temperature drops below freezing.
Climate is not the only concern you may have, what if you drop one of the camcorders in water? Good news, they float for up to 30 minutes and can be submerged for about an hour at 16.4-feet and four hours when submerged 3.3-feet. The ability to handle submersion makes these devices a fantastic option for snorkeling.
Battery life averages about 5 hours in all models, but the 4K model gets about 30 minutes less when shooting in 4K and about 30 minutes more when shooting in 1080p. The battery is internal, meaning that it cannot be changed while on-the-go. JVC states going with an internal battery offers more durability.
Zoom is something that makes carrying a device like this enticing. The 4K model offers 10x optical zoom and 200x digital while the other two models offer 40x optical zoom and 60x dynamic. Smartphones have recently began adding true zoom functionality by adding multiple lenses with different focal lengths, but the features are still quite limited.
The 4K model stands out with features like 4K time-lapse recording, 8 megapixel stills captured from 4K video, and higher frame-rate captures for slow motion playback. The other two models are quite similar, but what differentiates the two is that the cheapest model does not support the superior AVCHD Progressive Recording.
Pricing for the lineup ranges from $399-$999. As you would expect, the 4K model (GZ-RY980) is $999, the GZ-R560 is $499, and the most affordable model, the GZ-R460 comes in at $399. The GZ-R460 stands out a bit from the others since it is offered in black or orange color options. The cameras are available today at many retailers like Amazon and B&H.
