Hello Neighbor is developed by Dynamic Pixels and was later picked up by publisher tinyBuild for release on Xbox One and PC. It is a unique stealth experience with interesting AI that will see players sneaking into a neighbor’s house to discover its secrets. Today the game is set for release on both iOS and Android devices along with Nintendo Switch and PS4.
Hello Neighbor is based on an interesting premise: sneak on to your neighbor’s property without him catching you to find all the horrible little secrets he’s hiding in there. The house and property itself isn’t just your typical suburban dwelling either. The game and your neighbor will learn from your every move attempting to thwart players from using the same tactics in order to get deeper and deeper in to the experience.
For example, if you keep trying to jump the back fence as your first move or maybe just quietly through the front door when Mr. Neighbor guy isn’t looking. The next time you do that you might find a bear trap waiting to ruin your day and cameras monitoring the entrance way that will give your position away in seconds.
That escape route you’ve been carefully planing isn’t going to be very effective for long either as the neighbor will learn how to cut you off with shortcuts and the like. In other words, the game attempts to learn your habits in order to enhance ‘replayability’ and to create a more dynamic experience.
There is a story element here as well. You have just moved into a new neighborhood and you’re now living next to a very mysterious dwelling. When you start to hear screams coming from the basement of the house, clearly the only thing left to do is try to sneak in and find out exactly what’s going on here.
Reviewers of the PC/Xbox One version weren’t necessarily pleased with the experience as a whole when it comes to a full console or PC title. But the game’s format seems as though it will be at home on mobile as a more casual experience.
Either way, publisher tinyBuild is allowing gamers to try Hello Neighbor out for free on iOS and Android. The first act of the game won’t cost you a nickel so you can see if it’s worth the $14.99 full-game unlock. While that is a slightly higher price than we were hoping for on mobile, the straight forward IAPs allowing gamers to try it our for nothing is a nice touch.
The game is available now on iOS and Android (free-to-play), PS4 for $29.99 and Nintendo Switch for $40.
Note: Some Android players are having difficulty with compatibility on certain devices, and on Apple’s mobile environment, you’ll need to be on iPhone 6s, iPad 5 (2017), iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 4 or newer devices. iPod Touches are not supported.
