D-Link announced the newest member of its home automation family with the DSP-W110 mydlink WiFi Smart Plug. Like the previous generation, the DSP-W110 focuses on controlling the power to your household appliances, lights and more via smartphone. This latest version enters an already crowded marketplace, until now, has been dominated by Belkin and their popular WeMo series. Home automation continues to be an area of focus for a number of companies that are either in the appliance business or develop other electronics.
The D-Link WSP-W110 does everything that consumers have come to expect from these plug-ins, it features the ability to schedule on/off times, works via a smartphone app (iOS and Android) and connects over WiFi to your existing network. D-Link is pushing the Smart Plug as a simple way for home automation beginners to easily begin connecting their home. From Daniel Kelly, VP marketing at D-Link:
“The Wi-Fi Smart Plug is an incredible way to introduce yourself to the benefits of an automated home. Whether it’s brightening up the house before you get home, creating a lighting schedule for while you’re away, or remotely powering off a device you accidentally left on, the Wi-Fi Smart Plug makes your home brighter, smarter and more in tune with you.”
We suspect that this will continue to be a popular area of innovation over the next couple of years, particularly as Apple’s new HomeKit continues to be rolled out to developers. We have already seen Logitech step into home automation with their latest Harmony remote, as well as new ways of cooking your food via an iPad. The DSP-W110 is available to purchase today from D-Link at a price of $39.99, and from Amazon as well.
