Marty McFly's self-lacing Nikes are set to become a reality

In 1985 it seemed like a science fiction dream mixed with Phil Knight‘s wildest imagination. In 2015, it’s going to be a reality. The much hyped self-lacing Nikes from Back to the Future II seem to be set for launch at some point during the calendar year according to Nice Kicks, marking the 30th Anniversary of its inception.

After a wildly successful release in 2011, a version that did not feature auto-lacing, Nike has been working to make this dream a reality. Based off patents filed by the Oregon-based company, we will soon be seeing the very shoes that Marty McFly rocked so many years ago and I can tell you the 9to5Toys staff has strong feelings about it.

A lot of details are still cloudy on when that release might happen, with lead designer Tinker Hatfield noting that there are still “11 and two-thirds months left in 2015”. We do know from the patent filings that the system is based around gears in the sole that tighten and relax when needed. Regardless of when these shoes actually come to fruition, its pretty incredible that the coolest kicks from the 80’s are going to become a reality in the near future.
