Desk toys and building kits are always on our radar here at Toys. In terms of the latter, a recently launched Kickstarter campaign has caught our eye alkhich offers a new take on the classic construction set. Enter PIXIO, the building system based on multi-colored interlocking magnet plastic cubes that let you make pixelated creations and designs.
Pulling inspiration heavily from retro video game characters and other pixel art creations, PIXIO combines real-world construction with the iconic style. Much like Lego sets, PIXIO includes instructions which guide you through the construction of various creatures, characters and more. A smartphone application is in the works that walks you through the steps of building your desired creations. PIXIO blocks are reusable, so you can continue to build as many creations as you’d like. Great for displaying on your desk, using as a traditional building toy or even for educational purposes, PIXIO offers a variety of play styles and uses.
So how does PIXIO compare to the competition? Unlike other construction kits, it is based around one simple element, a plastic cube. Each PIXIO block is eight millimeters in all dimensions and weighs just over one gram, but is packed with six powerful Neodymium magnets. The combination of a uniform piece and magnetic interlocking allows for an intuitive building system. PIXIO blocks are currently available in 16 various colors, from Red, Orange and Yellow to Light Blue, Turquoise, Tan and more.
Pixio is currently available for backing on Kickstarter. It has raised $53,674 of its $70,000 campaign goal, but it still has 36 days to secure the remaining 24 percent of the funding. If PIXIO meets its fund goal and all goes as planned, it’ll be shipping later this year in August. Depending on how much you pledge, you’ll receive a different amount of blocks. Starting at $19, you’ll get 50 PIXIO in six colors, while selecting the $139 option earns you 800 blocks in all 16 colors. Various packages are also available which range in price between these two options.

Finally, you can create in the style of pure pixel art without any visible fixing elements. Many construction sets are available, but we wanted to have one that looked perfect: without prominent connecting elements, no complicated parts of any kind, and that could be easily assembled and disassembled.
