Sphero’s latest Star Wars iPhone-controlled droids include R2-D2 and BB-8

Sphero has announced at IFA 2017 that it is expanding its Star Wars-focused lineup today with two new droids. With The Last Jedi set to hit theaters on December 15th, Sphero is looking to cash in on this year’s latest release. Today’s announcement delivers R2-D2 and BB-9E remote control droids with full iOS and Android connectivity. Much like the popular BB-8 from a few years back, you’ll have full control over these adorable characters…

You’re most certainly familiar with R2-D2 at this point, but BB-9E may be a newcomer for some readers. Essentially the evil version of BB-8, this new character will be making his debut in this December’s feature film.

As you’d expect, R2-D2 can do all of the expected cute R2-D2 things, such as weaving around making funny sounds and falling on its head. The addition of a built-in speaker here makes this droid standout from its Sphero brethren. From the looks of it, R2-D2 is roughly double the size as the BB units, which will give more more room for the audio equipment.

R2-D2™ is an astromech droid from a galaxy far, far away…. Control your droid with your smart device, watch Star Wars™ films together, explore holographic simulations, and more.

The new BB-9E unit has much of the same functionality as the BB-8, but with a different casing. An all-black look will certainly play nicely if you already have Sphero’s other Star Wars units in hand.

BB-9E™ is a menacing astromech droid of the First Order. Control it with your smart device, watch Star Wars™ films together, explore holographic simulations, and more.

Both of today’s models are set to hit virtual shelves tomorrow on Force Friday. The BB-9E will sell for $150 while the larger R2-D2 unit is set to go for $180.
