Garmin has been putting GPS-capable devices in cars for some time now. But with the rise in GPS-enabled devices and other technology, the brand is being forced to expand into other categories as well. Its latest creation – Garmin Speak – brings Amazon’s popular Alexa Voice Assistant to your ride in a unique way. Think Echo Dot meets a simplified GPS unit.
Measuring just an inch-and-a-half in width, this road tripping add-on has an integrated OLED display that’s wrapped in the familiar blue ring that Alexa users have become accustomed to. Garmin is ditching the large rectangle displays that it made famous on GPS units for a more simplified look here, and I must admit, I’m intrigued.
Alexa users will find a very familiar experience with Garmin Speak. Amazon’s voice assistant is activated by simply saying “Alexa” and following up with a voice command. Where things get interesting is the integration with Garmin’s own software. For example, “Alexa, ask Garmin to route me to” followed by a location delivers the traditional GPS experience we’ve come to know over the years.
Of course, you’ll also be able to leverage all of the usual Alexa features. Garmin gives the example of building out a grocery list while driving, but you could also call up important information such as weather and the like. Obviously, Apple has been doing this – to varying degrees of success – with Siri for some time. But Amazon’s Alexa platform delivers some integrated features that Apple can’t quite touch.
“Our vision is that the Alexa service will be everywhere our customers want it, including inside the car,” said Ned Curic, vice president of automotive at Amazon Alexa. “Alexa on the Garmin Speak can help customers with many things, like controlling their smart home from the road, getting news or traffic, listening to Audiobooks, adding items to a shopping list, and ordering dinner with just their voice.”
Bluetooth compatibility allows users to stream Alexa, and other media services, directly through a car stereo. There is also an AUX out that can be hardwired to your setup, if preferred. Garmin will be leveraging your smartphone’s cellular connection to access data and queue up Alexa responses. That will be something users will want to keep an eye on, as it’s difficult to quantify how much data the voice assistant will use at this time.
Garmin Speak is available for purchase today at Amazon and Best Buy with a $149.99 price tag.
