In recent years, the fitness tracking movement has really grown in popularity, with Apple Watch and other smart devices offering insight into everything from our sleeping habits to physical activity. One of the lesser known players in the health tracking space was Oura, whose smart ring excelled at sleep monitoring. Now the company is back with a second generation of its ring that can tell you way more than just how well you slept last night.
Smartphone-aided health tracking devices typically fall into the form of a smart watch. Oura on the other hand has ditched the wrist and taken a different route, packing its health monitoring functionality into a ring form factor. With its second generation smart ring, Oura is looking to create a more general tracking device by bolstering its battery life, sensors, features and more.
The first model of Oura was touted as more of a sleep tracking ring than a device more comparable to Apple Watch or Fitbit. That’s changed with the recently unveiled second generation model which keeps its robust sleep tracking and adds a wide range features along with improving its design and companion smartphone application.
Oura Ring is comprised of a lightweight medical grade titanium casing which packs a 7-day battery life, gyroscope and PPG heart rate sensor. This array of sensors then allows the ring to track an extremely wide variety of aspects about your physical well-being like heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, breathing variance, body temperature and fitness stats, to name a few.
Alongside the launch of its latest ring, Oura will also be redesigning its iOS application to better track and show off the data it has collected. The new app will offer enhanced support for Apple’s own Health app and offer feedback based on your daily habits.
The ring is more intelligent this time around as well, thanks to an improved processor. Oura currently offers suggestions on improving your sleep, but with the release of the new model will boast circadian rhythm alignment suggestions and more. Other notable features include water resistance up to 100 meters and wireless charging.
Oura’s second generation smart ring is currently available for preorder starting at $299, with models climbing all the way up to just under $1,000. Shipping begins in April of 2018, which unfortunately means you won’t be able to gift Oura this holiday.
As someone who absolutely loves his Apple Watch and other smart health trackers, the Oura ring looks to be an extremely compelling accessory. With a focus on sleep tracking, Oura picks up where the Apple Watch slacks, not to mention the other stats the ring monitors. I don’t know about you, but Oura is an instant buy for someone as into health tracking as I am, one that I am eagerly awaiting.
The second-generation Oura ring is less than half the size of the original ring and has a seven day battery life. It is the only independently reviewed device by the S tanford Research Institute . The data provided by the Oura ring helps users live a better life, with in-depth sleep improvement programs and personalized circadian alignment guidance, which helps users understand their optimal times for sleeping, working out, and even eating.
“The new Oura ring uniquely combines beautiful design and pioneering technology with ultimate wearing comfort and scientific accuracy. The new ring is a real leap forward in technology – its processing power is ten-fold compared to the first Oura ring and even with added functionality the battery lasts up to one week with a single charge,” says Kari Kivelä, CTO, Head of Design and Co-Founder at Oura Health.
During the night, the new Oura ring tracks sleep quality, sleep stages (deep, REM, light and wakefulness), ECG level resting heart rate and heart rate variability as well as body temperature. With the new ring, users can also see their resting heart rate and heart rate variability on-demand during the day , for example during naps, meditation or breathing and relaxation exercises.
The new Oura ring builds on the success of the pioneering first-generation Oura ring. “S ince 2015 we have already helped users in over 50 countries a chieve better sleep and performance. We are very grateful for all the devoted customers and high user satisfaction, proven by the retention rates that are three times higher compared to other wearables,” s ays Petteri Lahtela, CEO and Co-Founder at Oura Health.
The new Oura ring is the world’s first consumer-available wearable that offers guidance on how to improve the individual circadian alignment . The circadian rhythm is the body’s
natural 24-hour clock that affects everything you do: when it would be optimal for you to sleep, rest, eat, and move. The new Oura ring helps you better align your lifestyle, activities and sleep habits to your unique and natural circadian rhythm. F or example, Oura helps you find your optimal bedtime to ensure more restorative sleep and good recovery from daily mental and physical strain.
The new Oura ring is available for preorder at o uraring.com . The new ring is made of titanium, it’s water resistant up 100 meters (328 ft.) and it comes in three unique designs and four color options. Shipping starts in April 2018 to 50+ countries, with prices ranging from $299 to $999.
