Last month we caught our first glimpse of the Dark Horse Super Mario Encyclopedia hardcover book. Spanning the entire history of the series (up until Odyssey that is), the 256-page encyclopedia is filled with information on the series, visuals, concept art, collectible guides and much more.
As we mentioned, Dark Horse has a habit of announcing the special edition version of its products a couple of weeks after the initial debut, much like what we saw with the trilogy of Zelda reference guides and the NES cartridge-style Deluxe edition. Well, as expected, the Limited Edition version of the upcoming Super Mario Encyclopedia book has now been unveiled. And this time, it has a literal trick up its sleeve.
The new Limited Edition Super Mario Encyclopedia will come in four different variations, each adorned with a different Mushroom Kingdom style cover. The holofoil prints are officially known as Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, Super Star and 1-Up. While all of them will ship in the same surprise clock slipcase cover, you won’t know which cover you’re getting until it ships and you unwrap the whole thing.
While not unheard of, and certainly all that nefarious, we can imagine some collectors’ preferring one over the other. But forget it, because you don’t get to choose. The pastel blue and yellow surprise block design is pretty nice looking and well, appropriate nonetheless.
While pre-orders on the standard edition encyclopedia are now live on Amazon, we are also seeing a nice price drop at the moment down from the usual $40.
That is certainly something to keep in mind because we do know the Limited Edition will hit retail with an $80 MSRP when it releases on October 23rd. Pre-orders are already live on Amazon. While we do expect to see price drops ahead of release, the LE versions don’t tend to see as deep a drop as the standard runs.
