Flip from over-ear to on-ear w/ these new magnetic leather/metal headphones

Master & Dynamic is an audio company that focuses on premium materials for its range of headphones, speakers and accessories. Today the company is set to “reinterpret customization” with the launch of the new MW50+ headphones.

The company already offers a wide range of high-end listening options from the MA770 wireless speaker designed by renowned architect Sir David Adjaye, to its solid brass earphones, Leica Camera-Specific headsets, and now, the interchangeable MW50+ headphones.

Master & Dynamic have designed the MW50+ Wireless Headphones with interchangeable earpads. Using a magnetic system, you just simply slide the over-ears off and replace them with the on-ear setup as you see fit.

The magnetic earpads, made of lambskin and memory foam, are attached to a fold-flat frame made of premium cowhide leather, stainless steel and aluminum. Master & Dynamic say the tactile headset mounted buttons are “similar to those found in luxury timepieces”. Those controls support the usual features like audio playback, calls and more.

You’re looking at 40mm Beryllium Drivers with a 5 to 30,000Hz frequency range. While those numbers sound a little overly confident to me, Master & Dynamic make great sounding gear so I wouldn’t expect much less from them anyway.

Next up is the patented milled aluminum antenna that provides a wireless connectivity range of about 100 feet. According to the company, that is around 3 times the industry average and more than enough room to move freely during workouts or around the backyard.

The 16-hour battery life sounds pretty nice to me as well. That’s more than enough juice for a really long flight (or something along those lines) sans-powerbank. You’ll also get a “heavy-duty” woven USB-C cable for charging among much more (see below).

The new MW50+ 2-In-1 Wireless On + Over-Ear Headphones are available for pre-order in three colors (Silver Metal/Black Leather, Silver Metal/Brown Leather and Black Metal/Black Leather) for $399 shipped. The MW50+ are scheduled to begin shipping on June 15th of this year. The package includes a detachable 1.25m standard cable, the USB-C charging cable, both ears options, a leather earpad case, canvas headphone pouch and a leather cable box.

While $399 feels a little pricey here, Master & Dynamic does appear to have gone all out with the extras and the high-end materials. The overall aesthetics are a nice balance of business and casual with colorways that suit just about anyone’s tastes. It is also nice (and somewhat unexpected) that both the over-ear and on-ear options are included in the price as well.
