More and more people are cutting the cable cord these days. According to recent reports, somewhere around 16,000,000 homes are now getting over-the-air content. Now, Sinclair Broadcast Group just launched STIRR, a free streaming service that offers live and on-demand content.
You’ll be able to access this content from your iOS or Android device, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Roku, or the web. This means that if you have any of the aforementioned streaming devices, you’ll be able to enjoy STIRR and view both live or on-demand content.
STIRR is a free, ad-supported streaming service w/ live and on-demand content
One of the hardest things when cutting the cable is continuing to get local or national programming you want. That’s where STIRR plans to come in, as it will offer “some of the most popular national news, sports, entertainment and digital first channels, a robust video on demand (VoD) library and a new local channel featuring programming based on a user’s location, ensuring that viewers can still access the local news and lifestyle programming that is relevant to their everyday life.”
At its inception, STIRR will offer 20 national networks:
- BUZZR
- Charge
- Cheddar
- Comet
- CONtv
- Dove Channel
- DUST
- FailArmy
- Futurism
- Gravitas
- Mobcrush
- MovieMix
- NASA TV
- Outdoor America
- The Pet Collective
- SOAR
- Stadium
- TBD
- The T
- World Poker Tour
Alongside these channels, STIRR also developed original content. This includes STIRR Movies, STIRR Sports, STIRR Life, and STIRR City, with plans to add new linear networks monthly to eventually offer over 50 by the end of 2019.
STIRR CITY is the most unique channel here. It will offer curated 24/7 programs based on where you live, giving you live local news, local/regional sports, entertainment, and city-focused lifestyle programming. This is a great option for those who are trying to get local programming without the ugly antennas that either stick to a window or hang around out in the open.
STIRR doesn’t just provide local channels, however. The streaming website also plans to offer a “deep selection of on-demand programming”, which will offer audiences an easy, convenient, and free way to enjoy local and national programming.
If you’ve yet to pick up a streaming device, be sure to grab an Apple TV (our favorite for people deep in Apple’s ecosystem), Fire TV (great for the budget-minded), or Roku (very versatile). If you’d rather just use your phone or laptop, STIRR also will stream to the web or an iOS/Android application, meaning you can access content regardless of where you are.
You can already start to browse STIRR’s content by city via its website. Are you going to cut the cord? Have you done so already? This could be what you’ve been waiting for.
