NBC Universal might have just accidentally confirmed the name of the upcoming Mario movie sequel as part of its 100th anniversary celebrations. The Super Mario Bros. movie took the gaming world and the silver screen by storm back in 2023, and we might have a better idea of what Shigeru Miyamoto meant when he said the team was “thinking about broadening Mario’s world further” for the sequel.
In a post on its official site celebrating its upcoming 100th anniversary, NBC Universal specifically mentioned a series of upcoming films from Universal Pictures, Focus Features, and the studio behind the original Super Mario Bros. movie, Illumination. It mentioned titles like How to Train your Dragon, Megan 2.0, HIM, Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme, and something entitled Super Mario World.
The statement has since been altered on the site to remove any mention of Nintendo or this likely not so mysterious Super Mario World film, as per reports.
Is this indeed the name of the next Nintendo Mario movie? It might very well be yes. This is Universal after all, and it does specifically mention a series of films from a series of its studios, illumination included. But it might have also just been a mistake.
Based on some of the world jumping and previous hints from Miyamoto, folks speculated we might be getting into some kind of Mario Galaxy-like treatment, with the world famous plumbers and friends being warped through various dimensions and galaxies for the second film, but perhaps “Super Mario World” is another interpretation of the same thing.
Following in line with historic, mainline platformer Mario game releases we got three Mario Bros. titles before Nintendo launched Super Nintendo in the U.S. with what is widely considered to be one of the best games ever, Super Mario World…there’s nothing wrong with naming the second film Super Mario Bros. 2 if you ask me, but Super Mario World does seem quite fitting here.
Super Mario World for SNES also ushered in the introduction of Mario’s world famous companion, Yoshi – in a post-credit scene in the Super Mario Bros. movie, Yoshi was clearly teased for the sequel as a white egg with green spots was briefly seen about to hatch amidst a pile of rubble. Could the Super Mario World sequel be taking us to Yoshi’s Island?
Nintendo has already confirmed the next Mario movie for 2026 with a live action Zelda film following up a year later in March 2027.
