Update: Hollow Knight Silksong officially releases on September 4, 2025.
After being confirmed as an official sequel way back in 2019, with development starting before that to some degree, it’s been a very long wait for Hollow Knight: Silksong. After years of no-shows at gaming events and showcases, and becoming one of most wishlisted titles on Steam ever, it looks as though Team Cherry is finally ready to break the silence in a major way and finally give us the good news.
Brief glimpses of the game have appeared in the years since it was announced that what was originally just going to be add-on content for the first title has expanded into a much larger and wider in scope sequel.
An announcement trailer years ago, an early build demo that same year, some Nintendo Treehouse gameplay footage shortly after that, a blog post here and there, and a preview of the soundtrack is more or less all we have seen over the better part of a decade now, but it very much appears as though everything changes today.
The game has been popping up more frequently as of late, and there is the latest playable demo live on the show floor at gamescom this year, and Keighley said that Silksong is “100%” releasing this year during the Opening Night Live ceremonies. You can catch leaked off-screen footage of the latest build from gamescom over on Reddit where the Skongers are going wild ahead of today’s special announcement. The demo is indeed showcasing areas of the game we have already seen, but it is clearly the latest build and it’s probably better off that Team Cherry isn’t spoiling much after making everyone wait this long.
Shortly before all of that, Team Cherry took to its X feed to officially reveal a “special announcement” video on its official YouTube with a countdown pointing at 7:30 a.m. PT/10:30 a.m. ET today. Today as in August 21, 2025, some 70 months after the game was officially announced.
What is in the Silksong special announcement today? Well, we don’t know exactly, but it better have confirmation on that 2025 release date and it better give us the exact date and platform details. The internet might explode if it doesn’t.
As I mentioned previously, I’m really hoping for even more than that. Some kind of a proper, if not relatively short, deep dive with the devs talking (and showing) more of the game’s new feature, perhaps even some kind of tantalizing story trailer teasing the game’s narrative. But at this point, I’ll take anything I can get.
