Last week Nintendo announced a surprise Nintendo Direct for Mario Day. It is perhaps not the main Direct you were hoping for with a new Mario game for Switch 2 or something, but instead a dedicated Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct showcase that is set to deliver our final good look at the new film ahead of release.
Mario Day 2026 – Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct
This year’s Mario Day festivities are a little bit different. Firstly, it is the first annual Mario celebration after the launch of Switch 2 and it is also landing a few weeks before the long awaited Super Mario Galaxy Movie hits theaters. After the film’s official toys and collectibles arrived at retail last month and with its release quickly approaching, we were bound to get more action from Mario’s next big screen adventure and it all goes live later today.
Nintendo will host a dedicated Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct today (March 9, 2026) and has confirmed it will deliver “the final trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” before its theatrical release.
If today’s show goes anything like previous Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct showcases, it will be a relatively short and sweet affair with some introductory words from Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination Studio heads either before or after dropping the new and final trailer. Here’s to hoping there is some kind of surprise here, perhaps something tied to the 40th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros. game, or just the magical plumber himself for his big day, but I’m not getting my hopes up for much more than the new look at the film itself.
Today’s Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct is scheduled to go live at 2 p.m. PT/5 p.m. ET and you can watch it below along with us:
Join us on Monday, Mar 9, at 2pm PT for the Nintendo Direct featuring the final trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Please note that no game information will be included in this presentation.
The new Mario movie is going galactic this time around, with new power-ups, new characters (Brie Larson’s Rosalina and Bowser Jr., voiced by Benny Safdie, to name a couple), and Yoshi’s mainline animated big screen debut. It hits theaters on April 1.
Here’s a look at the official Super Mario Galaxy Movie posters along with the brand new one Nintendo just revealed ahead of today’s Direct:
