Love Hultén is, in many ways, a one of kind designer and instrument creator. We have featured this stuff around here many a times in the past, but the epic new NES-SY2.0 has to be one of the more interesting and nostalgia-fueled new releases from Hultén in a minute.
This must-see new Hultén creation transforms the the sounds, mythos, and playful design cues from the classic ‘80s home console into a retrotastic synthesizer and I want one right this second.
A sort of second-generation version of the original NES SY37, the whole thing looks like it might be lifted from 2001: A Space Odyssey and then custom retro-fitted by Nintendo R&D 1. On the inside you’ll find Arcano System’s NES Poly synthesizer to emulate the chiptune sound of those classic 8-bit NES titles, but you’ll also find a MIDI visualizer of sorts on the mini custom display alongside some MIDI controls for musical input and to dial in the FS22 delay and reverb.
On top of all that, you can also stick original NES cartridges alongside NES controllers right into the front of the unit and actually play some of your favorite classics…because of course you can – it would be cool if they could figure out some way to run the games and sample the sounds directly into the music-making portion of the machine, but that also sounds like a lawsuit just waiting to happen too.
Hultén recently released a new video to the official YouTube channel to introduce the world to the epic new Nintendo homage instrument – check it out:
