Rockstar got hacked again, in case you missed it, and the culprits are demanding it pays up by tomorrow or they will leak GTA 6 all over the interwebs. Or something, or not at all, because Rockstar has now released a statement saying the hackers didn’t actually steal anything of value (by the sounds of it).
Hackers are everywhere, and aside from the potential financial gains they may or may not be receiving from these nefarious acts, leaking GTA 6 could be huge. Or at least enough of a threat to actually get a whole heap of pre-loaded Shark Cash Cards. I don’t think very many people would want that anyway, but the group who apparently accessed Rockstar servers – ShinyHunters – are demanding that Rockstar pays up before April 14th or they will leak everything (something).
Here’s the ransom note:
Rockstar Games
Your Snowflake instances were compromised thanks to Anodot.com. Pay or leak.
This is a final warning to reach out by 14 Apr 2026 before we leak along with several annoying (digital) problems that’ll come your way. Make the right decision. Don’t be the next headline.
FINAL WARNING PAY OR LEAK.
Cybersecurity outlets reported over the weekend that ShinyHunters breached Rockstar’s Snowflake data warehouse by way of SaaS cloud-monitoring tool via an AI analytics platform known as Anodot.
Since then Rockstar has issued a statement saying the group didn’t actually get anything at all – “a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed…[that] has no impact on our organization or our players.”
Which is both Rockstar admitting it was breached, and ensuring folks the group didn’t steal any of the good stuff…I think.
BBC has apparently been in contact with the hacker group in some way or other and the group now says it will leak the stolen data as stated because Rockstar had (at the time) not met its demands.
Rockstar is clearly a major target for groups like this, and it is clearly suggesting there’s nothing really to worry about here, but it’s hard to know exactly what “non-material” even means with any fidelity.
ShinyHunters are reportedly “a prolific group of English-speaking teenage cybercriminals” who specialize in data theft and extortion”, according to BBC. The group is reported to be responsible for hacking Ticketmaster and other major corporations in the past (or at least as far back in the past as a teenager could have done anything).
It looks like we are just going to have to wait to see how this plays out – are the crooks totally bluffing for cash, or is Rockstar totally downplaying this whole thing? The clock is ticking and the deadline is quickly approaching, but, whatever happens, I really hope no one’s data is let loose and that GTA 6 isn’t getting delayed again because of this.
