Grand Theft Auto 6 pre-orders go live tonight and we now know exactly what it will cost. However, what was supposed to be a momentous occasion, the most exciting game release in (almost) forever for millions of fans, has quickly become rife with (digital) controversy.
Not more than a few minutes after Rockstar officially announced the $80 list price on the standard edition and the $100 price on the Deluxe copy, we realized there was no new online at launch and news surfaced across the interwebs regarding the physical boxed copy – it’s literally just a box with a piece of paper in it so you can download the game you just paid $80 for.
Rockstar positioned the official news by suggesting this way physical copies of the game can be preloaded a week ahead of the November 19 release date, but this is largely to bring its overhead down on a game surely to sell 8 gazillion copies and, perhaps, to prevent early leaks.
Folks are not happy about this.
I, for one, couldn’t care much less about a physical disc these days, but I totally understand the outrage here. You pay your $80, you get your game, and it’s yours – you can let friends borrow it, you can easily take over to your cousins house and forget it there and never see it again, or trade it in when you’re done with it for a copy of the Bloodborne sequel that’s never coming out.

Some of the best prices of the year now live on Apple gear for Prime Day: AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Max 2, MacBooks, Apple Watch, more
And if that wasn’t enough to ruin pre-order night for the most anticipated game in history, and it’s very much not because this thing is still going to sell a ton, there’s that pesky Deluxe Edition for the $20 up charge that is also just digital. It includes a bunch if in-game weapons, outfits, and more as well as access to a series of in-game shops that players purchasing the standard edition of the game will be locked out of permanently, according to reports. I guess it is possible for Rockstar to change course on this decision at some point, but it might not be for years when the game gets a complete edition release.
Content locked behind the Deluxe paywall includes select special locations, some additional activities in the story, and exclusive vehicles, weapons, and outfits. But you’ll also lose access to the following shops without a Deluxe code:
- Rideout Customs (Mods): Transform vanilla vehicles into magnificent works of art with detailed interiors, exquisite rims, and donk stylings.
- Sara’s Unisex Salon (Hair Salon): Get signature salon styles for both Jason and Lucia, including facial hair for Jason and makeup and nails for Lucia.
- Stock 305 (Clothing): Style various unique and exclusive looks for Jason and Lucia at Stockyard’s premier destination for elevated streetwear.
- Electric Fang Tattoo (Tattoo): Stockyard’s most iconic ink bar, with over 50 signature tattoos for both Jason and Lucia- all designed by the artist collective FAILE.
- One-Eyed Willie’s (Mods): This mod shop in Lake Leonida specialises in off-road modifications and hand-painted automotive artistry.
So yeah, that all sort of sucks, especially the custom shops, but I’m still stoked for this thing, and really don’t mind going all digital here.
How enraged are you? Is all of this enough to make you wait for a giant sale months and months from now? Or are you pre-ordering anyway?
