Amazon announces upgraded Fire HD 10 tablet with fresh aluminum design & increased storage

This morning, Amazon announced an upgraded Kindle Fire HD 10 tablet with a new aluminum backing and increased internal storage. It is the first upgrade that the device has received since the fall of 2015. Amazon undoubtedly hopes that this move will bring a more iPad-like feel to its largest tablet with an Apple-style design and more room for apps/games. More details on pricing and availability below.

The Fire HD 10 features a 10-inch display that is powered by a 1.5GHz processor. Up until today, the storage options were limited to 16 and 32GB ($230/$260) but now jumps to 64GB for $290. There is a rear-facing 5MP camera and front-facing HD option as well. Users can expect up to eight hours of battery life on a full charge. Of course, every Kindle Fire tablet has access to Amazon Underground that includes over $20,000 worth of free apps and more.

So how does this new pricing model compare to Apple’s line of tablets? The HD 10 undercuts Cupertino on nearly every iPad across the board. iPad mini 4 has a smaller screen and lesser storage but starts at $399. The Air 2 has a comparable-sized display but again is priced much higher. Although we regularly see deals on these models, a price-conscious shopper that’s not attached to the ecosystem likely wants to look at Amazon’s offerings first.

Following today’s announcement, the newly designed and upgraded HD10 is available for purchase. Looking to save even more? Opt for Amazon’s smaller Fire tablets as a solid alternative. Don’t forget to load up on accessories for your new device, as well.
