Apple has now handpicked Checkmate! as the new App Store Free App of the Week. This is not your typical chess app though.
Simply start a conversation with someone [on iMessage], select the Checkmate! app and tap “New Match” to begin. You can play multiple matches with other people at the same time – even across all your devices!
As far as we can tell both players will need to download the app, which shouldn’t be a problem now that it has gone free for the week.
