Well CES has always been the time for the major players in the game to show off the next greatest thing in home theater gear. There’s always that crazy prototype or something along those lines that gives us a quick glimpse into the future. And while LG’s insanely large 88-inch 8K screen has already made headlines, this rollable OLED display is a whole other story…
The 65-inch showstopper gently unrolls out of a rectangular base station not much bigger than a typical (roughly 70-inch long) sound bar. At the push of a button, the flexible OLED display can entirely unfurl itself into the complete 65-inch viewing area, but it also has a few tricks up its sleeve as well.
When selecting a 12:9 aspect ration (or viewing material created that way), the display can roll back into the base station leaving just enough screen real estate to do so. LG also showed of a sort of HUD like setting where just a small slice of the screen is revealed to show notifications, weather, audio playback and things of that nature as well:
While it may still indeed be a prototype, not unlike those we have seen in the past, the possibilities are pretty clear here. Early reports suggest it is much closer to hitting the market than other displays at the show and it’s not impossible to imagine this kind of thing being just a few years out at this point.
While a 65-inch model might be a little bit overkill for some, it is easy to see how a display like this would likely do well in the marketplace at the right price and with the right options. Nonetheless, this is what CES is all about, so it’s great to see the big companies spending big money what may or may not be crazy ideas, even if it is just to keep us at their end of the conference hall.
