When you think of development studio FromSoftware, the first things that come to mind are more than likely not PSVR and classic, mystery-adventure games. Something closer to the nightmarish-lovecraftian environments and punishingly brutal combat of the beloved Souls-series titles and Bloodborne come to mind. While FromSoftware fans were busy with the studio’s new title Sekiro, otherwise known as the destroy all my dreams of a new Tenchu ninja game, another, even more unique Miyazaki title slipped through the cracks.
In collaboration with Japan Studio, FromSoftware and Hidetaka Miyazaki announced a PSVR game known as Déraciné. Now if you’re thinking this is going to be like the last time the studios got together on 2015’s Bloodborne, think again. Having said that, the much more somber and laid back VR game looks to have a lot going for it from what we have seen this far.
Masaaki Yamagiwa, a producer at Japan Studio working on the game, took to the official US PlayStation Blog today to announce the game’s official release date and to drop a brand new trailer on us.
Déraciné is described as “a classic adventure game brought to life by VR technology.” It takes players into the role of a small unseen fairy at an old secluded boarding school. While there does appear to be elements of horror and an overall darkness you might expect from these two studios, it does not appear to be on the level of their most recent releases.
It is a game about exploration and mystery where players will have to use various game mechanics to piece together the larger narrative. It looks as though there are sort of stop time like features as well what appears to be some kind of time reverse or the ability to bring things back to life.
As you explore a world where time stands still, you will gather a great number of hints, and a story will emerge as you put these fragments of information together. Then this story will deepen, and elements that you initially thought were simple will take on greater meaning.
We now know Déraciné is set for release on November 6th at $29.99. There will be a digital version available via PSN (listing doesn’t appear to be live yet) as well as a physical copy exclusively at GameStop. Pre-ordering either version will net you the Déraciné Dynamic PS4 Classroom Theme and a 6-Pack of PSN avatars.
Oh and by the way, I’m really stoked for Sekiro, I’m just a little bitter about the Tenchu thing. The latest trailer for the game dropped just recently and it is looking fantastic.
