Sony launches new mini home console, the Playstation Vita TV

Site default logo image

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rG5l78gbvpU

Sony has unveiled a new mini home console called the Playstation Vita TV this morning.  Although carrying the Vita name, this is not another mobile console, it’s a lightweight media hub that connects to your TV, allowing you to play games with a Dualshock 3 and enjoy other forms of media.

Playstation-Vita-TV-Japan-launch-reveal-02

The device is about the same size as a Vita at 6.4cm x 10.5cm, which is the smallest Playstation home console the company has ever released. Vita TV will have over 1300 games available on launch, due to the fact that it will support all PSP and PSone titles that are already available through PSN.

Additionally, the device will only play certain Vita games, as it does not support those that make use of the handheld’s touch, motion sensors, and camera functionality. Last but not least, Sony said Vita TV will support the streaming of PS4 games and the wireless Dualshock 4 through a “future system software update.”

It is expected to release in Japan later this year on November 14. There is no word from Sony as to whether the box will make it across the pond or not. More details and images below the fold. This announcement comes on the heels of Sony’s official PS Vita price drop and the announcement of a new, thinner model, coming later this year.

LifeProof’s new protective nuud case for iPad mini now available

Site default logo image

LifeProof-nuud-iPad mini-release-announcement-01Popular smartphone and tablet protective case maker LifeProof has just dropped a brand new nuud case for iPad mini. The case is now available for $120 with free shipping from LifeProof (which is about the street price for their bigger waterproof iPad cases).

Like its previous nuud cases, the iPad mini version will bring the company’s Screenless Technology that uses a compression lock system to keep your device protected from water, dust particles and shock damage, without the need of obtrusive screen covers etc. The case is built to survive a drop of up to 4 ft., exceeding military specifications for shock and vibration protection, according to LifeProof. As for water damage, your device can be submerged underwater at up to 6.6 ft. for one hour.

nüüd protects iPad mini from plunges and fumbles while keeping the screen open for direct touch. That’s right, you can touch the touchscreen — because touchscreen should be touched! And, the barely-there design is so slim and sleek, you won’t notice it’s there, until you’re glad it is

Even with all that protection all the buttons, ports and other functionality are completely accessible. The rear camera is protected with an anti-reflective optical glass lens to ensure protection and picture quality. Additionally, there is a shoulder strap included (seen below) and a portfolio cover is now available for it in black and gray at $40. Other accessories LifeProof will be launching soon include a floating LifeJacket for $60 and a mounting cradle for $50.

Sony & Samsung drop as much as $1500 off 4K Ultra HD TV sets

Site default logo image

Sony and Samsung have both dropped $1000 or more on their latest 4K TV sets. Although still pretty pricey, this certainly brings the TVs down to a much more affordable number.

The 55-Inch offerings from both companies see a $1000 price drop, bringing Sony’s XBR-55X900A down to $4000 and the Samsung UN55F9000 down to $4500. The massive 65-Inchers see an even deeper price cut. At around $1500 cheaper now, Sony’s 65-Inch XBR-65X900A is now $5500 and Samsung’s UN65F9000 is now down to $6000. The best part, Amazon has matched and slightly beat the new prices from the Samsung and Sony stores.

While still a hefty price tag, and certainly more expensive than Seiki’s 50-Inch 4K option, it is nice to see these brand name options starting to come down. Although 4K content might be a little hard to come by at the moment, Sony has released a new 4K media player filled with ultra hi res movies and Apple has included 4K support in the new Mac Pro.

Sony XBR-65X900A 65-Inch 4K TV: $5500
Sony XBR-55X900A 55-Inch 4K TV: $4000
