The best storage, drives, and NAS deals & tips for World Backup Day 2014

Site default logo image

While it’s always a good idea to back up those important files you have polluting your once perfectly tidy desktop, there’s no better way to celebrate World Backup Day 2014 than with a fresh copy of all your most cherished content to your favorite storage medium.

According to WorldBackupDay.com, 30% of people have never backed up their files before, so we’re here to give you a break down of some solid storage options. Most people take a three tiered approach to back ups with local storage or NAS, external hard drives and online cloud backups just to be safe. While both Dropbox and Google Drive are great options that offer free storage, you can always find out which online cloud option suits you best with 9to5Mac’s “Online backup services: why, how & which?” guide. Apple’s Time Capsule is a nice secondary possibility and we’ve rounded-up some current discounts on Network Attached Storage bays as well as some dependable portable drives you can check out below:

External Drives:

HP 11.6″ Chromebook LTE model available from Best Buy for $249 ($30 cheaper than the Wi-Fi model)

Site default logo image

From 9to5Google:

If you’re looking to give Google’s ChromeOS a try, the 11.6″ HP LTE-equiped Chromebook may be your best option right now. The non-LTE version of the Chromebook usually sells for $279, but the LTE model is actually available now for only $249. The connectivity isn’t the only difference between the two, either. The LTE model comes with 16 GB of flash storage while the more expensive, less-capable version uses a standard hard drive of the same size.

Both come with 2 GB of RAM, a 1.7 GHz Samsung Exynos processor, built-in webcam, support for 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, and weigh only 2.3 pounds. Both models are also available in a range of colors. Obviously, the connectivity differs between the two, as the LTE model comes with support for Verizon’s 4G LTE network.

Google offering 25% off select Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 accessories

Site default logo image

For a limited time only, Google is offering 25% off of select Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 accessories on the Play Store. Unfortunately not every accessory qualifies for the deal, but many of the most popular ones do. The Nexus 7 sleeve, case, and folio are all available for 25% percent off, while the Nexus 5 bumper and QuickCover qualify for the offer.

Of course, even with the 25% discount, all of these accessories are still considerably more expensive than they should be. You can find much better cases and folios, for both the Nexus 5 and Nexus 7, a lot cheaper on Amazon. If you want official, Google/LG made products, however, than this deal is certainly nothing to complain about.

Samsung Chromebook 11.6″ WiFi/2GB/16GB Flash + 500GB USB 3.0 Portable HD $230 Shipped ($320 value)

Update: Sold out!  Don’t miss out next time.  Follow 9to5Toys for all the latest deals… TwitterRSS FeedFacebook

Newegg is offering a Samsung Chromebook 11.6″ WiFi/2GB/16GB Flash bundled with a free 500GB USB3.0 portable hard drive for $230 with free shipping. That is a total savings of $70 off the value of this budnle if purchased separately. The Samsung Chromebook provides an 11.6-inch display, Samsung Exynos 5250 Dual Core Processor, 2GB of RAM, 2 USB ports, and HDMI.  The free hard drive will automatically be applied to your order when you put the Chromebook in your shopping cart.

9to5Google reviewed the Chromebook and found it to be perfect for light computing (web browsing, word processing, email, etc).

At $250, this is a no-brainer buy for many people. Just for Google’s bump in services alone, this is a compelling offer. Google gives you 100 GB of online space—something that normally costs $60 per year—free. It also hooks you up with 12 Gogo in-flight Internet vouchers that are worth around $10 each. That means (on data costs alone) the Chromebook breaks free just after two years of use. Plus, you get a very usable machine to ‘boot’.

So, who is this for? If you depend on your computer’s speed for your livelihood, this computer is going to be frustratingly slow. Get a faster machine like a high-end MacBook Air or MacBook Pro. However, if you want to have a backup machine or a secondary machine, the Samsung Chromebook makes a lot of sense for emergencies.

Amazon reviewers love it too, extending a 4 star rating from over 2,400 entries.
