EA announces upcoming Star Wars Battlefront beta, new gameplay modes and companion app

Update (10/12 3:10pm): EA has announced the new Star Wars Battlefront Season Pass that includes for upcoming expansion packs with two-week early access and exclusive gameplay modes. This is very similar to Battlefield 4’s Premium Pack. It is available for pre-order today for $50. Additionally, the Battlefront Beta will be available through tomorrow, October 13th.

The beta period has begun and downloads are now rolling out periodically across the world. Software will become available for download at varying times throughout the day depending on your location. You’ll need 8GB of free space on console platforms and 11GB on PC to grab the beta.

Pre-orders for the Darth Vader Sony PlayStation 4 console and a new limited edition bundle with a Han Solo Fridge are now available, as well.

If you weren’t already excited enough, there is more Star Wars Battlefront news to share today. The multiplayer beta will be hitting Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC in early October. In addition to the 40 player Rebel vs. Empire Walker Assault on Hoth, another new gameplay mode will be introduced along with a companion app. Full details below.

The Walker Assault on Hoth, previously detailed back in June, pits 40 players against each other focusing on the Empire’s massive AT-AT assault vehicles. This mode includes Y-Wing Bombers, Snow Speeders, as well as playable Luke and Darth Vader characters. EA also drops hint of a new mode called Survival Mission on Tatooine with two Rebels making their way through combat waves of Imperial forces. More details are set to come at a later date.

Additionally, today’s release makes note of a new Star Wars Battlefront Companion Experience app that will be released during the beta period. It will feature a “strategic card game” callled Base Command. It will also allow players to multitask and receive notifications from the game on iOS and Android devices. While it’s not exactly clear what this supplemental add-on will bring, we expect it to be similar to DICE’s Battlefield 4 companion app.

The specific launch date of the beta was not announced, but we’ll continue to post the latest news as the release gets closer. Star Wars Battlefront is available for pre-order today with discounts from varying retailers. Be sure to keep it locked to our daily games/apps roundups for the best deals on all the upcoming releases this fall.

STAR WARS BATTLEFRONT BETA: ARMED AND OPERATIONAL

It’s coming. The opportunity to whizz by gigantic, robotic panthers and bring them crashing down into the snow with a trip wire before blowing them to pieces with a cold-blooded shot to the neck. Or, to drive one of those said panthers and blast snowspeeders like a sniper standing three feet from a target. It’s coming soon. Sooner than the November 17 release date for Star Wars Battlefront.

EA has announced that Star Wars Battlefront beta will be coming to Playstation4, Xbox One, and on Origin for PC in early October. It will feature the Walker Assault on Hoth, a massive 40-player battle that will also give gamers a chance to play as either Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader, and the Survival Mission on Tatooine, where two Rebels must find a way to combat waves of Imperial forces. In addition to the two battle simulations will be a new mode appropriately named “Drop Zone.” More details on that in the weeks ahead.

Also set to debut during Star Wars Battlefront beta is the Star Wars BattlefrontCompanion Experience. Available at www.StarWarsBattlefront.com, the Star Wars Battlefront Companion experience will feature the strategic card game Base Command, and allow both Rebel and Imperial players to multitask and receive various notifications while playing Star Wars Battlefront. The Star WarsBattlefront Companion will be available in the Apple App Store and Google Play prior to the release of Star Wars Battlefront on November 17.
