The Raspberry Pi touchscreen display we’ve been waiting for is now available

Raspberry Pi has changed the way we look at microcomputing, access to technology and computer programming. It has opened the door to bringing these small devices to schools for educational programs of all kinds. Today, the Raspberry Pi Foundation officially launched a new touchscreen display that truly makes it an all-in-one alternative.

The new 7-inch display unfortunately won’t be as simple as hooking two HDMI cables together but there is a lot of potential here. It will certainly be a more mobile-minded solution than hooking up a monitor. Although there has been other touchscreen solutions for Pi available, there is a peace of mind in utilizing an official product.

Officially, the display will have a 800 x 480 touchscreen with support for 10-finger touches. Not exactly a Retina Display on an iPad Air, but it’s a start. It will connect via Pi’s DSI port and can be powered either by a microUSB cable or the GPIO output. The motherboard itself can be mounted to the back of the display if needed. This is a nice touch if you’re after a truly mobile Pi solution.

In a surprise move – Kano, one of our favorite DIY computer kits – has announced that it is accepting pre-orders for its own 10-inch HD display. This two-million pixel display has the potential to be a game-changing addition to Raspberry Pi computers. In classic Kano fashion, there will be step-by-step directions for putting the display together. It will have a built-in handle for taking the entire Kano system on the go. The Raspberry Pi Foundation official display is available for purchase today with a $60 price tag. Meanwhile, Kano’s option can be pre-ordered for $110.
