Hands-on: QardioBase 2 smart scale is the perfect weight-logging iPhone companion

Ever since getting my first Fitbit way back in 2013 I’ve been addicted to tracking as much data about myself as I can. Over the years I’ve used a variety of gadgets, but haven’t found a smart scale I’ve really loved. After Qardio unveiled its new QardioBase 2 smart scale I was hesitant to give it a shot. But after going hands-on I just might have found the ideal weight and measurement tracking scale.

At its core, the QardioBase 2 is just another smartphone-connected scale. It records your weight, calculates your BMI along with muscle density and more. But it’s the little nuances, added features and the ease-of-use that makes the scale shine amongst its competitors.

Qardio had launched the first version of its smart scale just about a year ago. And while the updated model sports the same overall form-factor as its predecessor, this time around the company has opted to build out the feature list and improve the scale’s functionality.

The QardioBase 2 is packed within a familiar sleek circular design comprised of both glass and plastic. While it is quite similar to the first version, Qardio has opted to increase the size of the scale’s base to help with stability. This decision seems to have paid off well as I had no issues with the unit staying in place while entering my weight.

This time around the updated QardioBase still tracks the same array of measurements. It can log your weight, BMI and fully body composition. The latter of these includes metrics like fat percentage, muscle density, water and bone mass.

Inside the scale Qardio has swapped out the first generation components in favor of an all new array of sensors and more. Addressing the prior version of the scale’s connectivity issue, the QardioBase 2 has a more efficient and reliable baseband and antennae design. In practice this means I never once experienced any connection hiccups and syncing data between my phone and the scale was effortless. It also runs off of an integrated rechargeable battery, ditching the original’s need for 6 AA’s.

The QardioBase 2 also includes an updated Smart Feedback LED display which was bright enough to see clearly throughout the day. Improved haptic feedback rounds out the list of new hardware features. While I can’t speak to the effectiveness of the original, the new vibration feedback is immensely noticeable and great for knowing when my measurements have been taken.

Alongside a new set of faster and more accurate body measurement algorithms, the QardioBase 2 also sports HealthKit connectivity. The ability to automatically sync data right to Apple’s health app was extremely helpful and is something that other iPhone users will definitely appreciate.

Expanding on the original’s features, the QardioBase 2 now offers multi-user support. Once paired with the companion app, the scale automatically recognizes users based on their weight and other measurements. I found the feature works flawlessly, as never once was my significant other’s data mistaken as mine (or vice versa).

If you currently find yourself in the market for a smartphone-connected scale then I couldn’t recommend the QardioBase 2 enough. With HealthKit and multi-user support it adds all the extra features I’ve looked for in a smart scale. At a $150 price tag there are definitely cheaper options on the market, but you get what you pay for. Qardio has clearly taken some time to refine its smart scale and the work they’ve put in shows through in day-to-day use.
