Fujiflm today is unveiling its latest consumer-focused camera, the X-A5 mirrorless that features a new 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS PZ lens kit. Starting at $300 for the body-only model, it will replace the previous generation X-A3 that served as the entry-level offering for some time. On top of an attractive price-point, Fuji is going for a decidedly retro look and feel this time around with leather and silver accents.
The Fuji X-A5 sports a primarily silver metal body with the option of adding faux leather wraps in brown, black or pink. It’s largely similar in looks to the previous generation with the primary upgrades coming inside. The controls are largely the same with a 180-degree rotating touchscreen that can be used for selfies and finding just the right angle.
Skip to the inside, and you’ll find a 24-megapixel APS-C sensor that features a new phase detection autofocus system. The primary difference lies in how this sensor works to detect depth, moving away from the previous method of utilizing contrast to detect distance.
Fuji has also introduced a new use interface system that ditches physical buttons for a new touchscreen approach. It’s clear that the X-A5 is meant to be a consumer-friendly camera, similar in operation to devices like a smartphone, which will hopefully make it easier to use.
The X-A5 can shoot 4K images with a burst rate of 15 frames per second, along with a new slow-motion feature at 720p resolutions. Sure, that’s hardly groundbreaking in today’s 4K world, but for most at this price point, these specs will do just fine. Optical stabilization and a powered zoom lens kit also serve as means for an easy entry into photography for beginners.
