While smartphone cameras continue to improve with every annual iteration, there’s still a place for traditional point-and-shoot models. This morning Canon has introduced its latest PowerShot camera with a handful of upgrades over the previous generation. Headlining its list of features is 4K functionality at 30fps, a notable addition for one of the brand’s smallest cameras. Head below for more details.
While the outside casing on the new PowerShot SX740 HS is largely identical to last year’s release, there are a few enhancements worth noting. Inside you’ll find the same 20.3MP sensor and a 24-960mm 40x lens. The upgrades really begin to show when you take a look at the new Digic 8 processor, which enables that 4K video we mentioned off the top. Users will also be able to capture still images at a faster 7.4fps, which is an upgrade over the previous generation model.
Canon includes the usual USB and wireless connectivity on the new PowerShot. This allows users to transfer images to a smartphone or other device via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi when on-the-go. While devices from Apple and other smartphone manufacturers have closed the gap in recent years on traditional cameras, there are still plenty of reasons to consider going with something like Canon’s latest offering.
Point and shoot cameras still offer value as a means for those looking to dabble in true photography, outside of the today’s smartphone-focused world. The new Canon PowerShot comes in at $399, which is certainly more affordable than most smartphones but potentially a tough sell for those already with a camera in their pocket. But 4K in this footprint will be worth it for some, particularly those with an interest in capturing footage in a traditional manner.
Canon has made this a consumer-friendly device with features like a touchscreen display that flips around for easy selfies. Gone are the days where specs alone are as important as they once were with ease of use now at the forefront. Certainly Canon’s bread and butter remains to be its lineup of DSLR cameras but it’s nice to see the entry-level models get attention every now and again.
The new Canon PowerShot SX740 HS will be available here in the United States come August in silver or black for $399.
