Despite some burning questions still up in the air, we already know a fair amount about the Nintendo Switch, have a good idea of what the launch titles will be, as well as a good understanding of how much larger the actual console will be and how much it might cost. A potential release date leaked recently, and a retailer might have just leaked what the new Switch 2 game case sizes will be.
Nintendo gave us a quick look at some game cartridges during the first-look Nintendo Switch trailer. A quick screen popped up describing the still mysterious backwards-compatibility of Nintendo Switch 2 showcasing a pair of images, one of Switch and one of Switch 2, both with what appear to be the same size game cartridge floating atop.
While this doesn’t confirm precisely the size of the game cartridges on the new console, one would assume the Switch carts will fit into the Switch 2 in some way or other considering Nintendo has specifically stated “Nintendo Switch 2 plays Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games, as well as both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.”
But what about the Nintendo Switch 2 game cases?
Nintendo Switch game cases are already significantly smaller than PS5 and Xbox cases, and it appear they will remain that way to some degree, but they might be getting at least a bit bigger if the latest leak rings true.
A French retailer has now reportedly given up some details on the Nintendo Switch 2 game cases as spotted by Felipe Lima of Universo Nintendo via Nintendo Life.
Better hope that shelving unit is big enough
Retailer Fnac its reported to have listed Switch 2 game cases measuring out at 19.5cm by 13cm, or 7.7 inches by 5.1 inches.
Some Redditors have recently put together a Switch 2 Box-Art size comparison to give folks a better idea of how much shelf space the new games might take up:

Now the leaked dimensions are just that, leaked information that has not been confirmed by anyone. And that goes for the concept render above. But if this does end up being the case, that looks quite a lot larger to me than what some outlets are suggesting.
These new games might end up taking more shelf space in the room room and in game stores (at least in terms of height and width – there have been no details on whether or not the boxes are thicker in anyway, which would, at least to some degree, be a more consequential measurement as far as shelf space is concerned).
What does this all mean? Well, nothing really…we just want our Switch 2 and Mario Kart 9 and new 3D Mario and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and classic Zelda remakes, and it all can’t come fast enough. Just know if you have any shallow shelving units for Switch titles in your game room, you better hope the new ones fit, or it’s off to IKEA for the next-generation of Nintendo.
