Switch 2 Edition games price upgrade pack

Update: According to an official Best buy listing, we can now confirm the price of the Kirby and The Forgotten Land Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs – it is listed at $19.99 to upgrade from the base Switch 1 version to the Switch 2 Edition with the expansion packs. Most folks believe this will also be the case for Super Mario Party Jamboree Switch 2 Edition

Update: Nintendo has now officially confirmed (via IGN) the upgrade pack price for the Switch Edition versions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is $9.99 – they are still FREE for Switch Online  + Expansion members

How much will Switch 2 Edition games cost? How much will it cost to upgrade to the Switch 2 Edition version of the Switch games you already own? Nintendo has released some official details that give us a very good idea of the prices we will be getting here. We have been seeing gamers asking a lot about all of this, so let’s dive into the details.

Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games and upgrade pack price

The Nintendo Switch 2 will be able to play three different types of games – Switch 2 exclusives, Switch 1 games, and Switch 2 Edition games. Questions surrounding the latter of which have been ample to say the least, so let’s talk about them and how much all of them are going to cost you.

Here’s a quick list of the as of now confirmed first-party Switch 2 Edition games:

  • Metroid Prime 4 Beyond TBD – releasing in 2025
  • Pokemon Legends Z-A TBD – releasing in 2025
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild $70 – releasing June 5
  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom $80 – releasing June 5
  • Mario Party Jamboree + Jamboree TV $80 – releasing July 24
  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land + Star-Crossed World $80 – releasing August 28

Gamers will be able to purchase the Switch 2 Edition of these games at retail, most of which will be up for pre-order starting next week on April 9. As of right now, and as you can see above, they will cost between $70 and $80 at retail.

How much will Switch 2 Edition upgrades cost?

You can indeed buy these games again if you want to gain access to the new Switch 2-exclusive features, but Nintendo did announce an upgrade path as well. On top of that, it is very much worth noting that Nintendo also announced that upgrade packs for the Switch 2 Edition versions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will be FREE for Switch Online + Expansion pack subscribers.

Nintendo made mention of an “upgrade pack” in the big Switch 2 Direct earlier this week, saying gamers will be able to upgrade the Switch 1 games they already own that are getting Switch 2 Edition releases without having to buy them again at the retail prices mentioned above.

How much does the Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack cost?

Nintendo was relatively vague regarding the actual cost of the “upgrade pack” option during the Direct presentation and has yet to officially announce the price of the upgrade packs, but it has released the prices for the upgrade packs on its official Japanese website. This, in combination with the full retail prices for these Switch 2 Edition games, gives us a very good idea of what Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs will cost in the U.S.

As you can see above, the upgrade pack for Super Mario Party Jamboree Nintendo Switch 2 Edition with new Jamboree TV expansion will cost 2,000 yen in Japan, much like the new Kirby and the Forgotten Land and its Star-Crossed World expansion.

And upgrade pack for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Nintendo Switch 2 Edition will cost 1,000 yen. The same price is listed for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.

Both of these prices fall (for the most part) inline with the retail prices Walmart and Best Buy already have listed – the upgrade packs for games with major enhancements and new expansion add-ons in the Switch 2 editions will be slightly more expensive.

As of right now 1,000 yen is roughly $7 USD and 2,000 yen is around $14 USD. As many of us already know, converting currency when it comes to retail prices isn’t an exact science, but these numbers do suggest Switch 2 Edition 2 upgrade packs in the U.S. will cost between $10 and $15. Some have even suggested the more price titles will land at closer to $20. But this more or less confirms the price of Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs on the U.S. at somewhere between $10 and $20.
