Sources claim Red Dead Redemption 2 is coming to Switch 2 as early as this year

Nintendo’s Switch 2 launch game lineup features more than a few major AAA ports of already released titles, and it sounds like the open-world wild west epic Red Dead Redemption 2 might soon be one of them. Developer Rockstar has been supporting the Switch for years and is already on record stating its “long-standing relationship with Nintendo,” but the latest suggests RDR2 might be its first launch on Switch 2.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is coming to Switch 2?

Rumors hit the web back in February that GTA 6 could see a Switch 2 launch at some point, but we now know that, if it ever happens, it isn’t going to be any time soon as Rockstar just announced that it was holding back what is arguably the most anticipated game release in nearly a decade until roughly this time next year. So even if GTA VI comes to Switch 2 at some point, it’s almost certainly going to be after that and potentially quite a while after.

All of that said, one of Rockstar’s other particularly fantastic and beloved titles could be landing on next-generation Nintendo hardware far sooner than that. Several major third-party titles that were rumored to be landing on Switch 2 are now confirmed – Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring, and Final Fantasy VII being just a few of them – and the folks over at GameReactor claim to have heard from sources close to Rockstar that the sequel to Red Dead Redemption is in the works for the sequel to Nintendo Switch. These claims have apparently also been corroborated by other sources as well.

If these details are indeed true, we aren’t talking about way in the future either as the same sources are claiming the game could land on Switch 2 as early as this year. We can’t confirm anything at this point of course, and a 2025 release seems perhaps too good to be true, but it could happen.

Full teardowns of the Switch 2 point to it basically being as powerful as a PS4, and it appears to be able to run titles like Cyberpunk 2077 (maybe), so it’s not entirely outside of the realm of possibility that it could handle Rockstar’s brilliant western.

It’s going to be a long while before we get our hands on GTA VI, no matter what console that might be on, and, while Rockstar certainly doesn’t need the cash, it could be a good hold over release for the company between now and next May – it will also likely want all hands-on deck to wrap up GTA VI, so maybe RDR2 is coming to Switch 2 sooner than later.

It is also worth pointing out that these same sources also seem to be pointing at a proper PS5 and Xbox Series X|S version of the game as well – you can of course already play RDR2 on those systems, but it never received a proper update the way GTA 5 did.
