What is Pokémon Day?

Pokémon Day is an annual celebration of well…Pokémon. It is held every year on February 27 to mark the original game’s release in Japan (known as Pokémon Red and Blue in the U.S.).

Big announcements, releases, and more for Pokémon Day 2026

This year’s celebration has already begun ahead of the actual day and this Friday’s Pokémon Presents showcase. While this week’s livestream will indeed mark the official kick-off, we have already seen some exciting new products hit, including the new LEGO Pokémon sets, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen officially announced for Switch and Switch 2, the confirmation of this week’s Presents showcase, an upcoming gameplay demo of the new Pokémon Pokopia on Switch, and more.

While the Presents showcase is typically quite heavy on apps, spin-off experiences, and typically some TCG stuff, this is the 30th anniversary show, there is also a remake of the original games officially landing on Switch and Switch 2, and we expect big things. Will we get a teaser or an official announcement for the next Gen 10 Pokémon Switch game? It could happen. Will we finally see the long-rumored Black/White or Gold/Silver games available on current-gen Nintendo hardware? We already got a remake release of sorts, but it could happen. I think a lot of folks, us included, are really hoping for a Colosseum/Gale of Darkness announcement for the Switch Online Game Cube library too, but you never know.

When did Pokémon originally release?

The first actual Pokémon experience was officially known as Pocket Monsters Red and Green and was released in Japan on February 27, 1996. It has since been officially abbreviated to Pokémon and become the world-wide phenomena we all know, that also happens to be turning 30 this year.
