Digital Switch 2 game prices are actually going down, Splatoon Raiders pre-order live at $50

This morning Nintendo officially revealed the summer release date for the single-player Splatoon Raiders Switch 2 game. Pre-orders are now live on the Nintendo Store, but, perhaps even better is the price – it looks like digital Switch 2 games will indeed be less expensive than physical boxed copies as we suspected.

Last month, the new Yoshi and the Mysterious Book pre-orders went live ahead of the May 21 release date. This announcement was also accompanied but a short, slightly vague, but mostly sweet official announcement saying “new Nintendo published digital titles exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 will have an MSRP that is different from physical versions.”

From the wording it was not entirely clear whether that meant Nintendo published Switch 2 digital titles would always release at lower prices, but it was more or less insinuated based on the next sentence in the announcement:

Nintendo games offer the same experiences whether in packaged or digital format, and this change simply reflects the different costs associated with producing and distributing each format and offers players more choice in how they can buy and play Nintendo games.

Fast forward to today when the new Splatoon Raiders went up for pre-order on the Nintendo Store ahead of its July release date, and we can more or less confirm that new digital Switch 2 games will carry lower prices, and maybe even every time – physical copies of Raiders are $60 and the digital version is $50.

I really didn’t think I would ever say a new Switch 2 game is releasing with a $50 MSRP ever again after Mario Kart World debuted at $80 and Bananza at $70.

That said, this is clearly not a Mario game, or Zelda, or DK for that matter, but it is further confirmation that Nintendo is at least trying work around the current economical hurdles and doing something to bring prices down for gamers, while also recognizing that digital titles obviously do not cost as much to produce.
